Research Writing in Japan: Assessing the English Language Skills of Japanese Researchers^{Dec 06}

1.	63% of Japanese researchers consider it 'Very Important' to communicate in English, but 76% categorized their English proficiency as 'Intermediate'.
2.	53% of researchers have undertaken additional English study programs.

In our most recent survey, we found that the Japanese researcher felt fluency in English was essential for interaction with non-Japanese colleagues, reading research papers, paper/poster presentation at international conferences, publication of articles in English language journals, and for working/training outside Japan.
