These are variables that can take on one of a limited set of values, usually non-numerical and based on some qualitative descriptor. Common examples of such variables are race, sex, and ethnicity. These variables cannot be summarized using means or medians, but with the mode instead. Categorical data is often described using a frequency distribution.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2>What is a frequency distribution?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>A frequency distribution describes the number of observations for each possible value of a categorical variable. Frequency distributions can be either tables or graphs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2>Frequency Distribution Table<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>A frequency table is simply a tabular presentation of frequency distribution:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-table\"><table><tbody><tr><td><strong>Race<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/td><td><strong><em>n<\/em><\/strong>&nbsp;<\/td><\/tr><tr><td>Non-Hispanic White&nbsp;<\/td><td>487&nbsp;<\/td><\/tr><tr><td>Black&nbsp;<\/td><td>336&nbsp;<\/td><\/tr><tr><td>Latin American&nbsp;<\/td><td>209&nbsp;<\/td><\/tr><tr><td>Asian-American&nbsp;<\/td><td>248&nbsp;<\/td><\/tr><tr><td>Other\/Did Not Respond&nbsp;<\/td><td>102&nbsp;<\/td><\/tr><\/tbody><\/table><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2>Graphical Depictions of Frequency Distributions<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Typically, frequency distributions are presented graphically as pie charts, bar graphs, or histograms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3>Pie Charts<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>A pie chart is a circle divided into multiple slices (like a pizza). Each slice depicts one value of a categorical variable. The size of the slices varies with the number of observations\/individuals.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Below is a pie chart of the same race data as above:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.editage.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/image.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-489\" width=\"576\" height=\"346\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.editage.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/image.png 480w, https:\/\/www.editage.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/image-300x180.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 576px) 100vw, 576px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The advantage of pie charts is that they are very easy to follow, especially if you are presenting your research to a non-scientific audience.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, pie charts are not frequently used in journal articles since they are cumbersome. Journals often set a limit on the number of tables and figures, and it may not be feasible to devote an entire figure to just one aspect of your sample. Also, pie charts make it difficult to spot small differences between frequencies.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3>Bar Graph<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>A bar graph (also known as a bar chart) is a type of graph in which each column represents a categorical variable. Variables can be plotted either vertically or horizontally. The height of a vertical column or the length of a horizontal column denotes frequency.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Below is the same data as above, converted into a bar graph:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" width=\"480\" height=\"288\" src=\"https:\/\/www.editage.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/image-1.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-490\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.editage.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/image-1.png 480w, https:\/\/www.editage.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/image-1-300x180.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 480px) 100vw, 480px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h3>Histogram<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>A histogram looks a lot like a bar graph, but with some important differences. Unlike a bar graph, it can be used for grouped frequency data, that is, when a continuous variable is divided into artificial classes or groups based on cutoffs that you set.
