Unlike a mediator, a confounder is not part of the causal pathway from X to Y\u2014it is a common cause of both. If a confounder is not controlled for, it can create a spurious (non-causal) association between X and Y, or mask a true association.<\/li><li>A mediator, by contrast, is part of the causal pathway: X causes M, and M causes Y.
