Editorial information | Dr Bob Löwenberg is the Editor-in-chief. He is Chairman, Department of Hematology at Erasmus University Medical Centre in Rotterdam, the Netherlands. His research focuses on developmental diagnostics and therapeutics, particularly acute myeloid leukaemia in the context of single centre and multicentre prospective clinical trials, which evaluate new agents and new therapeutic approaches taking into account the molecular heterogeneity of the disease. The editor-in-chief is supported by a deputy editor, two special sections editors, sixteen associate editors, and nearly a hundred-strong editorial board. CRITERIA FOR PUBLICATION
Papers focusing on human immunobiology, and those that advance the present understanding of normal or malignant hematologic processes, are preferred. Blood publishes research articles under the following 14 categories:
- Regular articles
- Brief reports
- e-Blood: Very well-designed systems biology studies, which, instead of testing a hypothesis, may encourage others to form a hypothesis by offering a data set of substantial value and reports of new methods. The articles ‘are fully citable and represent a genuine Blood publication . . . undergo standard rigorous peer review . . . copyedited and composed identically to other Blood papers . . . listed in the printed Table of Contents when the final version is available online.’
- Review articles
- Perspectives
- Spotlight: These include ‘articles that focus on emerging scientific and clinical developments or a recent burst of advances on a particular theme’ and are generally invited by the editor-in-chief.

EDITORIAL POLICIES AND SUBMISSION GUIDELINES
All manuscripts must be submitted at http://submit.bloodjournal.org/. New authors need to create an account before they can begin the process of submission.
MANUSCRIPT REVIEW PROCESS
Editorial decisions are ‘based not just on the technical merits of the work, but also on factors such as priority for publication, presentation of the material, and relevance to the Journal’s general readership.’ The journal receives more than 5000 submissions a year. Authors may expect a preliminary decision within 20 days. Contributions may be summarily rejected without peer review if they are considered ‘uncompetitive’ or outside the scope of the journal.
GOOD PUBLISHING PRACTICES
Blood offers ample guidance to prospective authors, including a page devoted to answers to FAQs. A separate web page is titled ‘How to get your paper published in Blood’, which offers advice – including videos – from Dr Cynthia E Dunbar, who served as Blood’s editor-in-chief from 2008 to 2012.
