Q: Can I extend the journal submission deadline for my revised paper?

Detailed Question -

When facing challenges to meet revision deadlines requested for a journal, it was acceptable to extend the deadlines in case of American Chemical Society up to several weeks. However, I have submitted my paper to a journal under Elsevier, and they have not responded to my request for deadline extension. Of course, I understand that it might not be the same for all Elsevier journals, but the dealine is coming close, and I might not be able to complete my revisions till then. Can you give any tips on how to get the requested deadline extended stragetically? Also, I wonder what will happen if I cannot submit my revised paper to the journal by the deadline? Thanks for your advice.

Answer:

Most journals respond to requests made by authors to extend the submission deadline of a revised paper. However, the request has to be made immediately after you receive the deadline. From your question description, it seems that the journal you have submitted to probably does not entertain such requests. Apart from sending multiple email requests, there's no way you can get them to extend the deadline strategically. Under the present circumstances, the best thing to do would be to try and meet the deadline. If you don't submit the revised manuscript within the specified deadline, your paper might not considered a revised submission and you might have to submit it as a new submission once again.
