We have published a paper for a retrospective epidemiological survey that was performed on a single facility (n = 140). In order to examine whether the obtained knowledge is correct, we are planning to perform the same epidemiological survey at more facilities (more than five facilities) and write a paper (assuming about n = 500). If we include the case of the first paper in the second paper, would it be regarded as a duplicate submission?
It looks like you are seeking to verify/validate the initial findings. That’s a great thing. To answer your query, this should be fine to do, but you need to take care of a few things, most of which are obvious ones.
- Cite the previous paper.
- If possible, try and have it published in the previous journal as a follow-up to the previous paper.
- Mention this in the cover letter while submitting. If needed, you may also make a presubmission inquiry with a new journal, in case the earlier journal is not able to publish the new paper.
