Q: Under Reviewer in scholarone for over 2 months! What should I do?

Detailed Question -

Hello everybody, I have submitted my manuscript for over 2 months via scholarone. The field of interest is in Earth Sciences. Although an ADM has been assigned, the 'Under Review' status seems to get stuck for almost 2 months. The particular journal has an avg tie from submission to first decision 182 days. Can anybody give some advice? Is my manuscript for peer review, is in an initial point, should I send a message to the editor asking for a status update (if there is)? Thank you!!

Answer:

Thank you for your question. The peer review process usually takes between 2 and 6 months. This may, however, vary across journals. Due to the situation necessitated by COVID19, journal workflows and decision-making may have been impacted to some extent.
Based on the information you have provided, the average time for peer review for the journal you submitted your paper to is 182 days. You have also mentioned that 2 months have passed, and you have not yet received a response. This can mean that the Editor in Chief is deliberating over the final decision, which can sometimes be a good thing for you. I would recommend waiting for at least a 2-3 more weeks. If you still do not get a response, you can send an email to the editor asking for an update.
