Depending on the availability of published research, reliable data, and characteristics of the problems, you can strategize a step-by-step plan of action that will give direction to your thought-process, enabling you to conduct research systematically within a set timeframe and produce quality results and detailed reporting.

On the other hand, the developmental path (path research) is an approach leading you to the materialisation of the said objective after examination of pre-existing factors, aspects, and methods.
