Q: What is the meaning of the 'Waiting for Other Review' status?

Detailed Question -

The manuscript status changed as follows: Under Review > Waiting for Other Review > Under Review. Why did this happen?

Answer:

You seem to have submitted to an Elsevier journal. If so, ‘Waiting for Other Review’ has the following meanings:

  • Your manuscript was sent for peer review, but not all the reviewers got back with the review. One or more may have pulled out from the review due to issues over availability, a mismatch with their subject area, or a conflict of interest. If so, the associate editor (AE) now needs to look for peer reviewers again.
  • All the reviews for your manuscript came back, but they were conflicting. That is, one reviewer may have decided ‘X’ and the other may have decided ‘Y.’ So, the AE now needs to send the manuscript to an additional or new reviewer to decide which way to go with your manuscript.

I don’t know how long it is since you submitted your manuscript, but the second possibility seems likelier. If so, you simply need to wait until this additional review is complete. If however you feel the first possibility seems likelier, and if you know of any peer reviewers, you may write to the AE with these suggestions.
