Q: What would be an appropriate research design to study the homeless in the community?

This sounds like an interesting study. But the thing is, what exactly are you planning to study (about the homeless)? You will need to define that very clearly. In the absence of those inputs, we can provide only some broad directions, as below.

A cross-sectional analysis could help you with obtaining the necessary data. Based on what you are planning to study, this could be supplemented by an ethnographic study, through which you closely observe the homeless and interact with them. And if you wish to measure a particular metric, a comparative study might be more suitable, where the metric is compared among the homeless and among the general population.
