Q: Why is the status of my revised manuscript unchanged for so long?

I submitted a manuscript to an Elsevier journal and received comments from three reviewers in almost one month’s time. It was a major revision decision. After one month, I submitted my revised manuscript, responding to all reviewers’ comments. The day I submitted the revised version, the status was ‘With Editor,’ and the next day, it became ‘Under review.’ Now, more than one month has passed, but the status is still ‘Under review’ with no change in the date either. What does this mean? Why is the re-review taking so much time?

Given the timeline (the date around which you submitted the revised manuscript), the delay is probably due to the holiday season. Even now, editors/reviewers would have just gotten back to work and would be busy catching up. Also, as there are three reviewers involved, perhaps not all have got back or not all have gotten to re-reviewing the manuscript. Finally, as this was a major revision, that could be the reason too that it’s taking time. Anyway, you could wait for a week or so, and if you still don’t see a status change, you could send a mail seeking an update.
