The workshops were conducted by experienced editor, medical writer, publications consultant, and trainer&#8211;Dr. Elizabeth Wager.\u00a0 These workshops were attended by over 300 researchers and journal editors. This was part of the workshop series in Japan. These workshops were organized by Editage\u00a0<strong>in collaboration with Elsevier<\/strong>and were held at\u00a0<strong>Kyoto University, Osaka University, Keio University, and the University of Tokyo, Japan<\/strong>. Editage also collaborated with\u00a0<strong>Uni Bio Press and and JST<\/strong>\u00a0(Japan Science and Technology) on this topic for workshops in Tokyo and Kyoto<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Dr. Elizabeth Wager began with a definition of misconduct; she also shared some interesting statistics on how often misconduct is detected. She said that in a study (Fanelli\u00a0<em>PLoS One<\/em>\u00a02009;<strong>4<\/strong>(5):e5738) 3,207 were screened. There were surveys conducted on fabrication and falsification. 2% admitted to misconduct themselves and 14% said that they were aware of misconduct by others. Dr. Wager went on to share some more statistics on how often this misconduct is detected.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"media-element file-default\" style=\"height: 188px; width: 250px; float: right;\" title=\"-\" src=\"http:\/\/insights.cactusglobal.com\/sites\/default\/files\/IMG_0828.JPG\" alt=\"-\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Here is a quick summary.<\/p>\n<p>PubMed retractions:\u00a0 0.02%<\/p>\n<p>US Office of Research Integrity (ORI): 0.01-0.001% (1 in 10,000\/100,000 scientists)<\/p>\n<p>Image Manipulation in\u00a0<em>J Cell Biology:<\/em>1% (8\/800)<\/p>\n<p>FDA Audit-investigators guilty of serious sci misconduct: 2%<\/p>\n<p>She then shared\u00a0<strong>simple rules to avoid plagiarism<\/strong>\u00a0some of which are listed below.<\/p>\n<p>\u00b7\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 If you refer to someone else\u2019s work, always reference it.<\/p>\n<p>\u00b7\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 If you copy more than a few words from someone else\u2019s publication, put them in quotation marks and reference them.<\/p>\n<p>\u00b7\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 If you want to use a figure or table from another publication, get peemission from the copyright holder.<\/p>\n<p>\u00b7\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 There is no rule against plagiarizing your own work but you need to avoid redundant<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"media-element file-default\" style=\"height: 188px; width: 250px; float: right;\" title=\"-\" src=\"http:\/\/insights.cactusglobal.com\/sites\/default\/files\/IMG_0840.JPG\" alt=\"-\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>For editors and publishers<\/strong>,<strong>\u00a0she had the following advice:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u2022\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Detect research and publication misconduct<\/p>\n<p>\u2022\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Prevent publication misconduct<\/p>\n<p>\u2022\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Educate authors<\/p>\n<p>\u2022\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Promote good practice<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-left: 1in;\">\u2013\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 be aware of how journal policies may influence behaviour<\/p>\n<p>\u2022\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Inform authorities, employers<\/p>\n<p>\u2022\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Correct the literature<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>However, she said that editors cannot (1) prevent research misconduct, (2) Investigate research misconduct, (3) settle disputes around authorship, and (4) investigate most types of publication misconduct although they may request investigations.<\/p>\n<p>She stated that while journals are not equipped to investigate serious research misconduct, it is important that researchers get a fair hearing.
