The academic community has been plagued by this question since a long time. However, in the past year, this seemingly moral issue took a legal twist with Elsevier suing the founder of Sci-Hub. To give some background, Sci-Hub is a website that provides unauthorized access to almost all paywalled research papers. It is the brainchild of Alexandra Elbakyan, a neuroscience researcher from Kazakasthan who founded Sci-Hub in 2011. The website describes itself as “a global science and technology publisher and provides free access to research articles and latest research information without any barrier to scientific community.” According to an article published in Science, the website has amassed around 50 million papers and is adding more to its collection every day. Moreover, it is accessed not only by underresourced researchers with limited funding but by researchers all over the world.

The launch of Sci-Hub has sparked various discussions about accessibility to research, whether the copyright to research should lie with authors or publishers, why access to academic research is expensive, and finally, whether the advent of the Sci-Hub era will change the direction of scholarly publishing.

While most researchers regard Sci-Hub as a savior, publishers consider Sci-Hub as a pirate website that is treading on the publishers’ copyrights (and business). Elbakyan argues that researchers write papers, but earn nothing out of it. On the other hand, publishers make huge profits from publishing content that is not created by them and charging exorbitant fees for subscriptions. Ironically, other researchers – and sometimes even the authors themselves – are unable to access the published research. In this regard, Elbakyan says, “Everyone should have access to knowledge regardless of their income or affiliation. And that’s absolutely legal. Also the idea that knowledge can be a private property of some commercial company sounds absolutely weird to me.” However, publishers are of the opinion that Sci-Hub is in fact propogating the use of illegal content and want the website to close down.

Often while conducting a study, researchers find themselves helpless when they want to access research papers behind paywalls. It is not possible for most of them to shell out money for each paper they want to read. Even universities find it difficult to pay for access to academic papers. While Marcia McNutt, the Editor-in-Chief of Science has argued that, “[T]oday, digital publishing is just as expensive as print for a state-of-the-art Web design,” many leading researchers and experts are questioning this pespective. According to them, the excessive access charges demanded by the publishers, especially in the age of digital publishing where journals can cut down on several costs that print publishers face, is unacceptable.

While open access is one of the ways to free academic literature from the clutches of paywalls and provide universal access, a remarkable aspect that has come to light from Sci-Hub user data is that many of the papers searched actively by researchers are open access. Why would a researcher look for a freely available paper on a pirate website? An obvious reason for this is the ease with which one can find the research paper one is looking for. “It is as simple to use as Google’s search engine, and as long as you know the DOI or title of a paper, it is more reliable for finding the full text. Chances are, you’ll find what you’re looking for,” mentions John Bohannon in his article. This hints that researchers find it difficult to navigate the publisher websites and prefer to turn to Sci-Hub for mere convenience.

In a world where access to academic literature depends on money, Sci-Hub is one of the best avenues for researchers to find what they are looking for. “I am all for universal access, but not theft!” says Alicia Wise, Elsevier’s director of universal access about Sci-Hub. While this sentiment echoes in the scientific community, the truth is that most researchers feel frustrated when they struggle to find and read the papers they need. The way the researchers have taken to Sci-Hub only indicates the desperation they face.

Will this situation steer the academic publishing industry towards providing universal access? Although it is difficult to predict the outcome, it is unlikely that journals will discard their subscription-based model. However, the staggering number of paper downloads and the number of researchers accessing Sci-Hub is likely to force the publishing industry to reconsider the current infrastructure. We need to recall Newton’s famous statement “If I have seen further than others, it is by standing upon the shoulders of giants.” Without access to scientific literature, it is impossible to expect any progress. Therefore, it is time the major stakeholders of science come together and work out a solution to make published research readily available to the science community.

Should access to academic research be free?
