
{"id":1052,"date":"2014-10-09T13:41:06","date_gmt":"2014-10-09T13:41:06","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.editage.com\/insights\/2014-nobel-prize-in-chemistry-awarded-for-innovation-in-fluorescence-microscopy\/"},"modified":"2025-04-28T05:55:33","modified_gmt":"2025-04-28T05:55:33","slug":"2014-nobel-prize-in-chemistry-awarded-for-innovation-in-fluorescence-microscopy","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.editage.com\/insights\/2014-nobel-prize-in-chemistry-awarded-for-innovation-in-fluorescence-microscopy","title":{"rendered":"2014 Nobel Prize in Chemistry awarded for innovation in fluorescence microscopy"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size:14px;\"><span style=\"font-family:verdana,geneva,sans-serif;\">This year&#8217;s Nobel Prize in Chemistry has been awarded to three researchers \u201cfor the development of super-resolved fluorescence microscopy.\u201d <a href=\"http:\/\/janelia.org\/lab\/betzig-lab\">Eric Betzig<\/a> of the Howard Hughes Medical Institute\u2019s Janelia Farm Research Campus in Ashburn, Virginia; <a href=\"http:\/\/www3.mpibpc.mpg.de\/groups\/hell\/personals\/shell.html\">Stefan Hell<\/a> of the Max Planck Institute for Biophysical Chemistry and the German Cancer Research Center; and <a href=\"http:\/\/web.stanford.edu\/group\/moerner\/\">William Moerner<\/a>\u00a0of Stanford University\u2019s will share this year\u2019s prize equally for bringing \u201coptical microscopy into the nanodimension,\u201d thus helping scientists to \u201cstudy living cells in the tiniest molecular detail,\u201d the Nobel Foundation said in its\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.nobelprize.org\/nobel_prizes\/chemistry\/laureates\/2014\/press.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">press release<\/a>\u00a0announcing the award.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size:14px;\"><span style=\"font-family:verdana,geneva,sans-serif;\">Betzig, Hell, and Moerner pushed the limits of light microscopes and enabled the imaging of molecular-scale structures in living cells using fluorescent molecules. Betzig and Moerner, working separately, found a way of controlling florescent molecules within a cell whose could be switched on and off, so that when the same area is imaged, the superimposed images reveal a nanolevel resolution. Hell, on the other hand developed a technique in 2000 called stimulated emission depletion (STED) microscopy, in which he used laser beams to scan every nanometer of fluorescently glowing molecules to produce a high-resolution image.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size:14px;\"><span style=\"font-family:verdana,geneva,sans-serif;\">The contribution of their findings is immense in that researchers can observe how proteins are distributed within the cells and how they move inside cells. As the Nobel committee states, &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.nobelprize.org\/nobel_prizes\/chemistry\/laureates\/2014\/popular-chemistryprize2014.pdf\">Microscopy has become nanoscopy<\/a>.&#8221;\u00a0Betzig, Hell, and Moerner\u2019s innovations have opened up a huge research field of super-resolution fluorescence nanoscopy for cell biologists to study molecular interactions with a light microscope, and can further contribute enormously to the fields of neurobiology, cell biology, and structural biology.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:
