Apart from being the link between authors and peer reviewers, they form an indivisible part of the publication process from acceptance of a manuscript for peer review to its publishing. Therefore, editors are at times also described as \u201ckingmakers\u201d since they can make or break scholarly careers. \u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: verdana,geneva,sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14px;\">Considering the seminal responsibilities journal editors are assigned with and the impact of their decisions on the scholarly community, professionalism forms the backbone of their role. However, a survey report published in Society for Research into Higher Education titled <a href=\"http:\/\/www.srhe.ac.uk\/downloads\/EvansHomerReport.pdf\">Academic journal editors\u2019 professionalism: Perceptions of Power, Proficiency and Personal Agendas<\/a> highlights concerns raised by authors in the UK regarding the way they are treated by journal editors. The lead author of the large-scale survey, Linda Evans, a professor of leadership and professional learning at Leeds\u2019 School of Education, sought to understand the perspectives of both journal editors and academic authors representing 7 disciplinary groups. The data was collected through an online questionnaire that yielded over 800 responses from authors, and this was followed by interviews with 20 editors and 15 authors.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: verdana,geneva,sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14px;\">According to the report, the main aim behind the survey was to know \u201cthe extent to which journal editors are perceived as wielding power within their academic communities, and on the nature and extent of any such power, and its consequences on those most likely to be affected by it: academics as authors.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: verdana,geneva,sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14px;\">It was found that around <strong>60%<\/strong> of academics have encountered at least one journal editor who failed to accept or to notice obvious weaknesses in a reviewer\u2019s report. The same percentage of respondents considered the quality of academic journal editors to be \u201cvery variable.\u201d Additionally, over <strong>64%<\/strong> of respondents felt that academic journal editors wield considerable power within their disciplinary\/subject research communities. Apart from this, authors also reported some specific problems they encountered while getting their papers published, such as:<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong style=\"font-size: 14px; font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif;\">Ethical issues:<\/strong><span style=\"font-size: 14px; font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif;\"> Authors complained that they were asked by editors to add citations to recently published papers from their journal to boost the journal\u2019s impact factor, failing which the papers were rejected. Apart from this, authors reported that they were forced to include reference citations of the work of the editor(s).\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14px; font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-family: verdana,geneva,sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14px;\"><strong>Turnaround time:<\/strong> The respondents reported that they were displeased by the turnaround time taken by the editors to respond to authors\u2019 queries and convey decisions, and editors\u2019 failure to speed up the publication process. Young researchers particularly felt that this affected their career. One of the authors mentioned that the journal to which he\/she submitted the paper took five years and three editors to ultimately convey a rejection.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14px; font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-family: verdana,geneva,sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14px;\"><span style=\"font-family: verdana,geneva,sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14px;\"><strong>Unprofessionalism: <\/strong>Some authors complained that editors did not handle reviewers\u2019 questions and recommendations ably. Editors accepted reviewer comments even though they are \u201cscientifically incorrect,\u201d asked authors to respond to completely contrasting reviews without offering any help, and could not competently judge reviewers\u2019 recommendations regarding a paper.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14px; font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-family: verdana,geneva,sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14px;\"><span style=\"font-family: verdana,geneva,sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14px;\"><span style=\"font-family: verdana,geneva,sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14px;\"><strong>Irrational decision-making:<\/strong> Editors were found to reject papers without any or satisfactory explanation. Moreover, authors also cited incidents of manuscript rejection despite the reviews being positive.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: verdana,geneva,sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14px;\">Despite these predominantly negative experiences regarding journal editors, the authors of the survey caution against forming a generalized perception regarding journal editors. They say that they found <a href=\"http:\/\/www.timeshighereducation.co.uk\/news\/scholars-feel-slighted-by-the-editorial-gatekeepers\/2017571.article\">little evidence that editors could be portrayed as \u201cexcessively powerful gatekeepers\u201d<\/a> and believed that incidents of breaches of professionalism were \u201cisolated and generally atypical occurrences.\u201d Interviews with editors revealed the problems they face while executing their responsibilities and their views about their role:<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: verdana,geneva,sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14px;\">Editors emphasized that they <strong>knew the power they wielded<\/strong> over authors and scholarly publishing. Many revealed that they <strong>tried to mentor early career researchers<\/strong> \u201cto bring their submissions up to publishable quality.\u201d<span style=\"font-family: verdana,geneva,sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14px;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: verdana,geneva,sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14px;\"><span style=\"font-family: verdana,geneva,sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14px;\">One of the editors mentioned that journal editors are paid to be \u201cprofessional editors\u201d and \u201cnot academics.\u201d Thus, they have to \u201csee things differently\u201d in order to <strong>\u201cmaximise the revenue generation by the journal<\/strong>, and to <strong>maximise the impact factor<\/strong> of a journal.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: verdana,geneva,sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14px;\"><span style=\"font-family: verdana,geneva,sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14px;\"><span style=\"font-family: verdana,geneva,sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14px;\">Editors shared their <strong>problem of reaching out to prominent researchers<\/strong> in particular fields whose publication they wanted to secure in their journal. Editors of low IF journals mentioned that they usually got submissions from inexperienced authors, which they confessed to <strong>editing extensively<\/strong> in order to make them publication worthy.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: verdana,geneva,sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14px;\"><span style=\"font-family: verdana,geneva,sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14px;\"><span style=\"font-family: verdana,geneva,sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14px;\"><span style=\"font-family: verdana,geneva,sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14px;\">As per editors, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.timeshighereducation.co.uk\/news\/scholars-feel-slighted-by-the-editorial-gatekeepers\/2017571.article\">their primary motivations were altruistic<\/a>. They receive <strong>little remuneration or institutional recognition<\/strong> for their work, and view their job as an unrecompensed \u201cduty, rather than a source of pleasure.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: verdana,geneva,sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14px;\">The survey concluded by remarking that although there were instances of breach in editors\u2019 professionalism, those were seldom and isolated instances. The authors summarized that there was \u201clittle support and justification for casting and portraying academic journal editors as excessively powerful gatekeepers who jealously guard and control ingress into, and progression within, the academy.\u201d Overall, \u201cthe broad consensus was that editors are generally effective, conscientious, fair and proficient, and the system within which they operate fit for its purpose.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Journal editors play a formative role in academic publishing.
