Happy reading!<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size:14px;\"><strong>1. The changing purpose of academic publishing:<\/strong> The increasing pressures to publish, intense competition, and the metrics game has changed the nature and purpose of academic publishing over the years. Today, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bloombergview.com\/articles\/2016-01-05\/academic-publishing-is-all-about-status\">publishing a paper in a journal is more about prestige or status<\/a> rather than dissemination of information <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bloombergview.com\/contributors\/justin-fox\">Justin Fox<\/a> argues in this interesting article.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong style=\"font-size: 14px;\">2. Scientific language:<\/strong><span style=\"font-size: 14px;\"> Are scientists are increasingly using exaggerated language to convince editors and reviewers to publish their work? In their discussion-based article, Joeri Tijdink, Christiaan Vinkers, and Wim Otte cite a recently published study that concludes that the pressure to publish in top tier journals is leading to the creation of \u201c<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.lse.ac.uk\/impactofsocialsciences\/2016\/01\/26\/are-scientific-findings-exaggerated\/?subscribe=success#blog_subscription-2\" style=\"font-size: 14px;\">a paradigm of over-interpretation, overstatement and misreporting of scientific results<\/a><span style=\"font-size: 14px;\">,\u201d which contradicts the core values of science.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong style=\"font-size: 14px;\">3. Data sharing:<\/strong><span style=\"font-size: 14px;\"> The move towards openness is gradually gaining momentum with global scientific bodies backing policies that call for transparency, and funders and journals adopting data-sharing requirements. However, embracing the change can get tricky for scientists. Virginia Gewin discusses the <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.nature.com\/naturejobs\/science\/articles\/10.1038\/nj7584-117a?WT.mc_id=TWT_NatureNews\" style=\"font-size: 14px;\">challenges and vulnerabilities associated with open data that scientists find difficult to overcome<\/a><span style=\"font-size: 14px;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong style=\"font-size: 14px;\">4. Protecting researchers while making science transparent:<\/strong><span style=\"font-size: 14px;\"> Stephan Lewandowsky and Dorothy Bishop state that \u201c<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.nature.com\/news\/research-integrity-don-t-let-transparency-damage-science-1.19219?WT.mc_id=TWT_NatureNews\" style=\"font-size: 14px;\">The same institutions and bodies that have scrutinized science must also start a conversation about how to protect it.<\/a><span style=\"font-size: 14px;\">\u201d In their post, they have identified ten red-flag areas to differentiate healthy debate from problematic research practices and questionable scientific inquiry.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong style=\"font-size: 14px;\">5. Journal rejection and impact factor: <\/strong><span style=\"font-size: 14px;\">An analysis published in the Frontiers blog discredits the common belief that a highly selective journal has a high journal impact factor. After studying the impact factors of 570 journals and their rejection rates, Pascal Rocha da Silva, a process strategy manager at Frontiers, concludes that \u201c<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/blog.frontiersin.org\/2015\/12\/21\/4782\/\" style=\"font-size: 14px;\">A vast number of high quality papers are being sacrificed to engineer high impact factors, yet the strategy fails for the vast majority of journals.<\/a><span style=\"font-size: 14px;\">\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong style=\"font-size: 14px;\">6. Reporting bias: <\/strong><span style=\"font-size: 14px;\">According to a PLOS biology report, roughly <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.nature.com\/news\/missing-mice-gaps-in-data-plague-animal-research-1.19101\" style=\"font-size: 14px;\">70% of medical studies do not adequately report the number of animals used in experiments<\/a><span style=\"font-size: 14px;\">, dropping out some of the animals from the final analysis. Such misreporting can lead to a bias in the studies and raise questions about the validity of those experiments. \u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong style=\"font-size: 14px;\">7. Gender bias in academia: <\/strong><span style=\"font-size: 14px;\">A group of authors analyzed 679,338 articles in the field of engineering with nearly 1 million co-authors and found that although <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.sciencemag.org\/news\/2016\/01\/female-engineers-publish-better-journals-receive-fewer-citations\" style=\"font-size: 14px;\">female researchers were publishing in more prestigious journals as compared to male researchers, they received fewer citations<\/a><span style=\"font-size: 14px;\">. It was observed that women played a marginal role in collaborative projects and collaborated more with other female researchers.
