The National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC), one of the country\u2019s major basic-science funding agencies, and the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS), one of China&#8217;s most prestigious research institutions, made an <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nature.com\/news\/chinese-agencies-announce-open-access-policies-1.15255\">announcement<\/a>\u00a0on May 15\u00a0that researchers associated with these institutions should give unrestricted access to their papers within a year of publication. Since the research output in China has <a href=\"http:\/\/www.editage.com\/insights\/where-does-china-stand-in-global-academic-publishing\">increased considerably<\/a>, the number of articles that would gain public access would also be enormous.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family:verdana,geneva,sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size:14px;\">Both the agencies are yet to release detailed guidelines on the implementation of the policy. While\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14px;\">CAS has <\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-size: 14px; font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif;\">a network of repositories for its institutes,\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size:14px;\">NSFC will establish a repository for researchers, which will probably be modeled after the NIH\u2019s PubMed Central.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size:14px;\">This latest develpment is a big step for\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-size: 14px; font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif;\">China as it has\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 14px;\">formally joined <a href=\"http:\/\/www.editage.com\/insights\/open-access-a-global-movement\">the international push to make research freely available<\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 14px;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>China, one of the leading contributors to global scientific output and research, has joined the shift to open access.
