An equally elaborate and rigid system, or a group of systems, governs the naming of organisms. These systems are usually referred to as codes of nomenclature, such as the<\/span><em style=\"font-size: 14px; font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif;\"> International Code of Zoological Nomenclature<\/em><span style=\"font-size: 14px; font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif;\">, the<\/span><em style=\"font-size: 14px; font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif;\"> International Code of Nomenclature of Bacteria<\/em><span style=\"font-size: 14px; font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif;\">, and the<\/span><em style=\"font-size: 14px; font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif;\"> International Code of Nomenclature for algae, fungi, and plants<\/em><span style=\"font-size: 14px; font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif;\">.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 14px;\">This article covers the 4 basic points of style applicable to all names.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14px;\">The names of species are commonly used in most research papers. These names, always in Latin, consist of two parts (hence the term<em> binomial<\/em>); for instance,<em> Oryza sativa<\/em>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-size: 14px; font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif;\">\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14px;\">for rice\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14px;\">(<em>O<\/em><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-size: 14px; font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif;\"><em>riza<\/em>\u00a0is Latin for rice, and\u00a0<em>sativa<\/em>\u00a0means cultivated)\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14px;\">or<em> Homo sapiens<\/em><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-size: 14px; font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif;\">\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 14px; font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif;\">for humans\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14px;\">(<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-size: 14px; font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif;\"><em>Homo<\/em> is Latin for man and <em>Homo sapiens<\/em> means the wise man)<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 14px; font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif;\">. The first part, <\/span><em style=\"font-size: 14px; font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif;\">Homo<\/em><span style=\"font-size: 14px; font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif;\">, is a noun and the second part, <\/span><em style=\"font-size: 14px; font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif;\">sapiens<\/em><span style=\"font-size: 14px; font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif;\">, is an adjective that modifies the first part. Therefore, the second part is known as the specific epithet.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14px; font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif;\">Let us take a look at the\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 14px;\">basic points of style authors should be aware of while using\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 14px;\">names of species<\/span><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 14px;\">:<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: verdana,geneva,sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14px;\"><strong>1. Capitalization<\/strong>: The first part names the genus and always starts with a capital letter whereas the second part names the species and never starts with a capital letter.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: verdana,geneva,sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14px;\">Authors should note that the single letter is followed by a dot (e.g. <em>T. turgidum<\/em>), and Microsoft Word, assuming that dot to be a full point (period), automatically changes the next letter to its capital form. However, names of species are never capitalized.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: verdana,geneva,sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14px;\"><span style=\"font-family: verdana,geneva,sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14px;\">Whether such single-letter abbreviations can begin a sentence is a point of style that varies from journal to journal: some journals find it acceptable whereas some journals require the name of the genus to be spelt out in full even when it has been spelt out earlier.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: verdana,geneva,sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14px;\"><strong>2. Italics<\/strong>: Although these binomials are printed in italics, it is useful to remember that the italics are to differentiate the names from the surrounding text: if the surrounding text is italicized, the names are printed in the normal, upright form.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: verdana,geneva,sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14px;\"><strong>3. Abbreviations<\/strong>: It is common to give the complete binomial at the first mention and then onwards abbreviate the name of the genus to the initial letter, as in \u2018The most commonly grown species of wheat is<em> Triticum aestivum<\/em>, or common or bread wheat. Macaroni wheat is<em> T. turgidum<\/em> and emmer wheat is<em> T. diacoccum<\/em>.\u2019<br \/>\nA<span style=\"font-size: 14px; font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif;\">\u00a0paper may discuss species that belong to different genera, and some genera may happen to have the same initial letter, as in<\/span><em style=\"font-size: 14px; font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif;\"> Solanum tuberosum<\/em><span style=\"font-size: 14px; font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif;\"> (potato) and<\/span><em style=\"font-size: 14px; font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif;\"> Sorghum bicolor<\/em><span style=\"font-size: 14px; font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif;\"> (sorghum, a millet). Although some codes allow a genus name to be abbreviated using a 3-letter version,<\/span><em style=\"font-size: 14px; font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif;\"> Scientific Style and Format<\/em><span style=\"font-size: 14px; font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif;\"> specifically discourages this practice [1, p. 379].<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: verdana,geneva,sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14px;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14px; font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-family: verdana,geneva,sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14px;\"><strong>4. Referring to unspecified species<\/strong>. At times, it is necessary to refer to one or more species without specifying the exact species i.e. without giving the second part of the binomial.
