In this post, we bring you some of the most interesting tidbits of information about the goings-on in academia, handpicked by our editorial team. \u00a0Happy reading!<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size:14px;\"><span style=\"font-family:verdana,geneva,sans-serif;\"><strong>1.\u00a0<\/strong><strong>Journal launch:\u00a0<\/strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.eurekalert.org\/pub_releases\/2015-09\/pp-ri082515.php\">A new OA journal called &#8220;Research Ideas and Outcomes,&#8221; (RIO) launched on September 1<\/a>\u00a0aims to publish not just research outcomes but also proposals, experimental designs, data, and software. Open peer review and flexible pricing are some of the unique aspects of RIO. Some academics, however, have expressed doubts about researchers openly sharing their ideas, since the field of research is extremely competitive.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size:14px;\"><span style=\"font-family:verdana,geneva,sans-serif;\"><strong>2.\u00a0<\/strong><strong>Media coverage of science:<\/strong>\u00a0Misinformation in science news is widespread and exists for several reasons. While sometimes it is a result of journalists&#8217; misunderstanding of science, at other times, it is the result of fake claims made by researchers. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.digital-science.com\/blog\/perspectives\/how-the-science-media-centre-helps-avoid-face-palm-moments-when-reading-the-news\/\">Science Media Center is trying to protect the public from misinformation<\/a>\u00a0through a model for responsible science coverage in the media.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size:14px;\"><span style=\"font-family:verdana,geneva,sans-serif;\"><strong>3.\u00a0<\/strong><strong>A new era of research in Iran:<\/strong> With the signing of the nuclear deal and the end of sanctions, <a href=\"http:\/\/news.sciencemag.org\/economics\/2015\/09\/unsanctioned-science\">new avenues have opened for science in Iran<\/a>. Earlier, Iranian researchers found it challenging to get published in international journals and collaborate with international researchers. Now with Western science engagement, Iranian researchers are hopeful of a better future for research and development in the country.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size:14px;\"><span style=\"font-family:verdana,geneva,sans-serif;\"><strong>4.\u00a0<\/strong><strong>Predatory publishing: <\/strong>Are publishers and journals solely to blame when it comes to predatory publishing? In <a href=\"http:\/\/poynder.blogspot.co.uk\/2015\/09\/predatory-publishing-modest-proposal.html\">Predatory Publishing: A Modest Proposal<\/a>, Richard Poynder argues that all those researchers sitting on the editorial and advisory boards of predatory journals should also be considered \u201cpredatory.\u201d He proposes that the OA movement should create a database containing all the names of researchers who sit on the editorial and\/or advisory boards of the publishers on Jeffrey Beall\u2019s list.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size:14px;\"><span style=\"font-family:verdana,geneva,sans-serif;\"><strong>5.\u00a0<\/strong><strong>Retraction:\u00a0 <\/strong>If you don&#8217;t have enough money to pay to the journal, your paper might be retracted! A group of researchers submitted a paper to the journal Plant Signaling &amp; Behavior and the paper got published online in the &#8220;author accepted version.&#8221; However, <a href=\"http:\/\/retractionwatch.com\/2015\/09\/08\/cant-pay-the-page-charge-this-journal-will-retract-your-paper\/\">the paper did not make it to the &#8220;version of record&#8221; because the authors were not able to pay the fees to get the paper published<\/a>.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size:14px;\"><span style=\"font-family:verdana,geneva,sans-serif;\"><strong>6.\u00a0<\/strong><strong>Open access: <\/strong>Rogerio Meneghini and Abel Packer\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 14px;\">discuss\u00a0<\/span><font face=\"verdana, geneva, sans-serif\"><span style=\"font-size: 14px;\">the extent to which the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC1796769\/\">scientific community has adapted English as the lingua franca of scientific communication<\/a><\/span><\/font><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 14px;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC1796769\/\">\u00a0and how this affects authors from non-English-speaking countries<\/a> in their paper<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 14px;\"><span style=\"font-family:verdana,geneva,sans-serif;\">\u00a0&#8220;<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 14px;\">Any scientist must therefore master English\u2014at least to some extent\u2014to obtain international recognition and to access relevant publications.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size:14px;\"><span style=\"font-family:verdana,geneva,sans-serif;\"><strong>7.\u00a0<\/strong><strong>Gender equality:<\/strong> The Australian Academy of Science has launched the SAGE Project, Science in Australia Gender Equity, to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.science.org.au\/SAGE\/Pilot\">improve the representation of women in STEM research in Australian universities<\/a>.
