Science is primarily objective, not subjective, hence the infrequent use of the personal pronouns\u00a0<em>I<\/em>\u00a0and\u00a0<em>we<\/em>, and a preference for the passive voice, in research papers.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family:verdana,geneva,sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size:14px;\">Perhaps it is this tendency to avoid referring to individuals and using such terms as cases, subjects, and even data points that led the\u00a0<em>AMA Manual of Style<\/em>\u00a0to include specific guidance on this topic as part of general guidance on correct and preferred usage of common words and phrases. The manual maintains [1] that the \u2018use of case is dehumanizing when referring to a specific person.\u2019<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family:verdana,geneva,sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size:14px;\">I find two trends to be relevant to this discussion. The first relates to lawsuits against doctors about violating privacy. Even when the text contains no identifying information, patients may file lawsuits against the physician-authors. Such possibilities encourage medical authors to be as impersonal as possible. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family:verdana,geneva,sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size:14px;\">The other trend relates to what is sometimes referred to as \u2018political correctness,\u2019 which is seen in such practices as using\u00a0<em>visually challenged<\/em>\u00a0for the blind and\u00a0<em>differently abled<\/em>\u00a0for the handicapped. Some people find even the term\u00a0<em>subject<\/em>, when used to denote a person, as indicative of a lower status. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family:verdana,geneva,sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size:14px;\">In response to these considerations, which make <a href=\"https:\/\/www.editage.com\/editing-services\/medical-editing-and-proofreading-services.html\">medical writing<\/a> especially challenging, we have networks such as the EQUATOR Network, short for <a href=\"http:\/\/www.equator-network.org\/toolkits\/authors\/\">Enhancing the QUAlity and Transparency Of health Research<\/a>, which offers toolkits for authors of research papers.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family:verdana,geneva,sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size:14px;\">Researchers in the field of medicine may feel overwhelmed by the sheer quantity of guidance available to them. However, in choosing between <em>case<\/em> and <em>patient<\/em>, it is useful to remember that\u00a0<em>case<\/em>\u00a0goes with the abstract whereas\u00a0<em>patient<\/em>\u00a0goes with the concrete: a\u00a0<em>case<\/em>\u00a0of hepatitis is a statistic that excludes everything else about the event but a\u00a0<em>patient<\/em>\u00a0suffering from hepatitis not only has hepatitis but many other attributes as well including gender, age, and dietary habits that have a bearing on the case.
