However, there is no universal rule against the use of the first person in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.editage.com\/scientific-editing-service\/\">scientific writing<\/a>.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size:14px;\"><span style=\"font-family:verdana,geneva,sans-serif;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/eloquentscience.com\/\">Dr. David Schultz<\/a>, the author of the book\u00a0<em>Eloquent Science<\/em><strong><sup>1<\/sup><\/strong>, set about finding out whether it is ok to use the first person in scientific writing. He looked up a number of books on writing research papers. He\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/eloquentscience.com\/2011\/02\/are-first-person-pronouns-acceptable-in-scientific-writing\/\">found<\/a>\u00a0that several guides on writing academic papers actually advocate the use of the first person.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size:14px;\"><span style=\"font-family:verdana,geneva,sans-serif;\">For example, in\u00a0<em>How to Write and Publish a Scientific Paper<\/em>, Robert Day and Barbara Gastel\u00a0say:<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size:14px;\"><span style=\"font-family:verdana,geneva,sans-serif;\"><em>Because of this [avoiding first person pronouns in scientific writing], the scientist commonly uses verbose (and imprecise) statements such as \u201cIt was found that\u201d in preference to the short, unambiguous \u201cI found.\u201d Young scientists should renounce the false modesty of their predecessors. Do not be afraid to name the agent of the action in a sentence, even when it is \u201cI\u201d or \u201cwe.\u201d<\/em><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size:14px;\"><span style=\"font-family:verdana,geneva,sans-serif;\">Many of the world\u2019s most renowned scientists have used the first person, as explained in<em>The Craft of Scientific Writing<\/em>:\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size:14px;\"><span style=\"font-family:verdana,geneva,sans-serif;\"><em>Einstein occasionally used the first person&#8230;. Feynman also used the first person on occasion, as did Curie,\u00a0Darwin, Lyell, and Freud. As long as the emphasis remains on your work and not you, there is nothing wrong with judicious use of the first person.<\/em><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size:14px;\"><span style=\"font-family:verdana,geneva,sans-serif;\">Perhaps one of the best reasons for using the first person while writing is given in\u00a0<em>The Science Editor\u2019s Soapbox<\/em>:<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size:14px;\"><span style=\"font-family:verdana,geneva,sans-serif;\"><em>\u201cIt is thought that\u2026\u201d is a meaningless phrase and unnecessary exercise in modesty. The reader wants to know who\u00a0did the thinking or assuming, the author, or some other expert.\u00a0<\/em><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size:14px;\"><span style=\"font-family:verdana,geneva,sans-serif;\">On the other hand,\u00a0<em>The Scientist\u2019s Handbook for Writing Papers and Dissertations<\/em>\u00a0argues that in using the third person, the writer conveys that anyone else considering the same evidence would come to the same conclusion. The first person should be reserved for stating personal opinions.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size:14px;\"><span style=\"font-family:verdana,geneva,sans-serif;\"><em>Good Style: Writing for Science and Technology<\/em><sup><strong>2<\/strong><\/sup> is also against use of the first person in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kolabtree.com\/services\/scientific-writing\/\">scientific writing<\/a>, explaining that \u201creaders of scientific papers are interested primarily in scientific facts, not in who established them.\u201d However, this book also points out that there are points in scientific papers where it is necessary to indicate who carried out a specific action.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size:14px;\"><span style=\"font-family:verdana,geneva,sans-serif;\">In\u00a0<em>Eloquent Science<\/em>, Dr. Shultz concludes that \u201cfirst-person pronouns in scientific writing are acceptable if used in a limited fashion and to enhance clarity.\u201d In other words, don\u2019t pepper your paper with I\u2019s and We\u2019s. But you don\u2019t have to rigidly avoid the first person either. For example, use it when stating a nonstandard assumption (\u201cUnlike Day and Gastel, I assumed that\u2026\u201d). Or use it when explaining a personal action or observation (\u201cWe decided not to include\u2026\u201d).
