Research that reports negative results is usually frowned upon, at times, by both authors and publishers. However, recognizing the importance of negative results and the impact it can have on expediting scientific advancement, PLOS ONE &#8211; the world\u2019s largest journal by number of papers published &#8211; <a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.plos.org\/everyone\/2015\/02\/25\/positively-negative-new-plos-one-collection-focusing-negative-null-inconclusive-results\/\">announced<\/a> the launch of <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.ploscollections.org\/article\/browse\/issue\/info:doi\/10.1371\/issue.pcol.v02.i39#id_Research Article\">The Missing Pieces: A Collection of Negative, Null and Inconclusive Results<\/a><\/em>, a new addition to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ploscollections.org\/\">PLOS Collections<\/a>. According to PLOS Blogs, \u201cThe collection has been titled \u2018<em>Missing Pieces\u2019<\/em>&nbsp;in reference to the many null results filed away indefinitely and ultimately excluded from the scientific record.\u201d &nbsp;<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family:verdana,geneva,sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size:14px;\">The newly launched collection by PLOS ONE aims to publish negative results since they can pave the way for positive results. <em>The Missing Pieces Collection<\/em> also hopes to highlight papers that contradict previous findings. Studies such as the one which&nbsp;reported the <a href=\"http:\/\/journals.plos.org\/plosone\/article?id=10.1371\/journal.pone.0110697\">lack of a significant effect<\/a>&nbsp;of postpartum psychological distress on mothers in rural Bangladesh, contradicting the findings reported in India, would be a part of PLOS ONE\u2019s new venture.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family:verdana,geneva,sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size:14px;\">With the launch of this collection, PLOS ONE has joined the ranks of other journals such as <em>The Journal of Negative Results<\/em> that intend to promote the discourse of negative and null findings. \u201cNegative findings are becoming the missing pieces in the scientific literature,\u201d the announcing post elucidates, and therefore, wants to encourage researchers to come to the fore and report their negative results.&nbsp;<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><script type=\"text\/javascript\" charset=\"utf-8\" src=\"https:\/\/static.polldaddy.com\/p\/8802549.js\"><\/script><noscript>&lt;a href=&#8221;<a href=\"http:\/\/polldaddy.com\/poll\/8802549\/\">http:\/\/polldaddy.com\/poll\/8802549\/<\/a>&#8220;&gt;Do you think more journals should encourage the publication of negative, null, and inconclusive results?&lt;\/a&gt;<\/noscript><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>In the highly competitive academic world characterized by the &#8216;publish or perish&#8217; culture, scientific reporting is inclined towards publishing positive findings.
