But are these journals&#8217; author guidelines clear enough for nonnative English speakers?<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: verdana,geneva,sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14px;\">This study is the recipient of the Best Poster Award (Council of Science Editors&#8217; 2013 Annual Conference) and has been published in <em>Learned Publishing<\/em>. Its authors discuss quantitatively the completeness and clarity of author guidelines of international English-language journals in the biomedical and physical sciences.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: verdana,geneva,sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14px;\"><strong>Abstract<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: verdana,geneva,sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14px;\">To assess quantitatively the completeness and clarity of author guidelines of international English-language journals in the biomedical and physical sciences, we randomly sampled 80 journals for which author guidelines were available online in English. The guidelines were reviewed for completeness and clarity in addressing \u2018aims and scope,\u2019 \u2018submission and post-submission processes,\u2019 \u2018formatting instructions,\u2019 \u2018ethical requirements,\u2019 and \u2018authorship,\u2019 and were subjectively assessed as being complete (score, 1) or incomplete\u00a0(0),\u00a0and clear (1) or unclear\u00a0(0). Scores were represented as mean percentages. No journal scored 100% for completeness and clarity. \u2018Formatting instructions\u2019 was the most complete and clear category, and \u2018authorship,\u2019 the least complete and clear category. Biomedical science journals were more complete and clear in all categories, except \u2018authorship,\u2019 compared to physical science journals.
