Although several such expressions mean more or less the same thing, there are subtle differences, and a careful writer takes these differences into account while undertaking any academic writing.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: verdana,geneva,sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14px;\"><strong><em>About<\/em>\u00a0and<em>\u00a0Approximately<\/em><\/strong>:\u00a0For reasons that have been linked to the number of fingers we have \u2013 five on each hand \u2013 numbers are usually rounded off to multiples of five or ten. It is this characteristic that makes the following sentence sound odd: &#8220;Each plot contained about 17 trees.&#8221; The apparent contradiction here is that 17, not being a multiple of 5 or 10, does not sound like a number that has been rounded off and yet it is qualified by the expression<em>\u00a0about.<\/em>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: verdana,geneva,sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14px;\">At the same time, the writer of the above sentence wanted to emphasize that the figure was not exact, in which case the better word would be<em>\u00a0approximately.<\/em>\u00a0Here is what the book<em>\u00a0Use the Right Word<\/em>\u00a0has to say about the difference: &#8220;About is often used interchangeably with approximately, but it does not stress the closeness to accuracy that approximately does.&#8221;<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: verdana,geneva,sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14px;\"><strong><em>About<\/em>\u00a0and<em>\u00a0Around<\/em><\/strong><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 14px;\">:<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 14px; font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif;\">\u00a0The difference between about and around is more straightforward and largely a matter of preference:<\/span><em style=\"font-size: 14px; font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif;\">\u00a0about<\/em><span style=\"font-size: 14px; font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif;\">\u00a0is more common in British English and<\/span><em style=\"font-size: 14px; font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif;\">\u00a0around<\/em><span style=\"font-size: 14px; font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif;\">\u00a0in American English (<\/span><em style=\"font-size: 14px; font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif;\">Pocket Fowler&#8217;s Modern English Usage<\/em><span style=\"font-size: 14px; font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif;\">, p. 8).<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14px;\">Develop more understanding about the other set of terms that often confuse authors:\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-size: 14px; font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.editage.com\/insights\/scientific-writing-a-number-of-and-the-number-of\">Scientific writing: &#8220;A number of&#8221; and &#8220;The number of&#8221;<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Science is all about measuring and counting, and expressions that indicate whether a given figure (quantity) is precise or rounded off are common in all science writing.
