In her resignation letter, Obokata wrote, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/health-30534674\">&#8220;I worked hard for three months to show significant results, but I&#8217;m so exhausted now and extremely puzzled. I am keenly aware of my responsibility for troubling a number of people because of my inexperience. I even can&#8217;t find the words for an apology.&#8221;<\/a> Riken stated that her resignation has been accepted. \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family:verdana,geneva,sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size:14px;\">The discovery of STAP method was hailed by the scientific community as groundbreaking research and garnered global media attention. Soon, however, fellow researchers challenged Dr. Obokata\u2019s claims when the results in her papers were found to be irreproducible. The Riken institute investigated the accusations of data manipulation and fabrication, and announced that they had found <a href=\"http:\/\/www.editage.com\/insights\/a-new-twist-in-the-stap-story-scientist-declared-guilty\">evidence of misconduct<\/a>.\u00a0This led to the retraction of both the papers from <em>Nature<\/em>, which created a media storm. The controversial case took a tragic turn when the senior Japanese scientist <a href=\"https:\/\/www.editage.com\/insights\/stap-case-takes-a-shocking-turn-with-yoshiki-sasais-death\/\">Dr. Yoshiki Sasai\u2014a co-author of the STAP papers\u2014committed suicide on August 5 in Riken institute<\/a>.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family:verdana,geneva,sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size:14px;\">Dr. Obokata was given three months by the institute to replicate her results <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2014\/12\/20\/world\/asia\/scientist-who-had-claimed-stem-cell-breakthrough-resigns-from-japanese-research-institute.html?_r=2\">in a specially built laboratory, where she was constantly monitored by scientists and also by surveillance cameras<\/a>. Although Dr. Obokata claimed to have reproduced her results \u201cmore than 200 times\u201d she ultimately was unsuccessful in recreating stem cells using the STAP method in the stipulated period. As a result, she stepped down from her position.
