A new free online interactive tool, called \u201cCost Effectiveness for Open Access Journals\u201d is here to help you do just this.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14px;\"><span style=\"font-family: verdana,geneva,sans-serif;\">The open access model is definitely gaining popularity and many authors are willing to pay the necessary fees to ensure that their work is available to readers as soon as it is published. Unfortunately though, this scenario has also given rise to many bogus or predatory publishers, whose journals often charge exorbitant author fees but lack quality and credibility. I had written a <a href=\"http:\/\/blog.sciencenet.cn\/home.php?mod=space&amp;uid=769813&amp;do=blog&amp;id=656267\">post about these bogus publishers<\/a> a couple of weeks ago.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14px;\"><span style=\"font-family: verdana,geneva,sans-serif;\">The tool, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.eigenfactor.org\/openaccess\/index.php\">Cost Effectiveness<\/a>, aims to help authors compare the cost-effectiveness of different open access journals and select the most suitable journal for their work. The tool plots the article influence of a journal against its publishing fees. The article influence is calculated based on the number of citations articles in that particular journal have received, while also considering the source of the citations.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14px;\"><span style=\"font-family: verdana,geneva,sans-serif;\">This tool will help authors choose between two journals with similar publishing fees and can even be useful for identifying bogus publishers.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14px;\"><span style=\"font-family: verdana,geneva,sans-serif;\"><a href=\"file:\/\/mum03a-fs\/Thought%20Leadership\/ScienceNet%20blog\/Posts\/Source%20site%20for%20screenshots:%20http:\/www.eigenfactor.org\/openaccess\/index.php?catid=25&amp;pt=0\">Here\u2019s how the tool works:<\/a><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Step 1:<\/strong> Select a field of study from the drop-down list:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"responsive\" src=\"http:\/\/insights.cactusglobal.com\/sites\/default\/files\/journals.png\" alt=\"\" data-file_info=\"%7B%22fid%22:%22408%22,%22view_mode%22:%22default%22,%22fields%22:%7B%22format%22:%22default%22,%22field_file_image_alt_text%5Bund%5D%5B0%5D%5Bvalue%5D%22:%22%22,%22field_file_image_title_text%5Bund%5D%5B0%5D%5Bvalue%5D%22:%22%22%7D,%22type%22:%22media%22%7D\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 14px;\">Step 2: <\/strong><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 14px;\">Center the cross-hairs on the journal you are interested in.
