Here, I discuss a few more pairs of English words that non-English-speaking authors often mix up and use incorrectly in academic manuscripts.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>1.<em> Methodology <\/em>versus<em> method<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">A \u201cmethodology\u201d is a system of methods and principles for doing something; it is a body of practices, procedures, and rules particular to a branch of knowledge.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><u>Example<\/u>: We examined the <u>methodology<\/u> of contemporary forensic science.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The word \u201cmethod,\u201d however, refers to a technique or a procedure.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><u>Example<\/u>: We invented a new <u>method<\/u> of manufacturing ceramics.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Therefore, \u201cmethodology\u201d cannot merely be used as a more impressive variant of the word \u201cmethod\u201d as it refers to a combination of your procedures and your rationale for employing them. When referring to a specific procedure, \u201cmethod\u201d is the correct word to use.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>2<em>. If<\/em> versus <em>whether<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The word \u201cwhether\u201d is preferred while discussing two options.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><u>Example<\/u>: The participants were asked <u>whether<\/u> or not they felt any discomfort after the treatment.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">In the above example, the expression \u201cor not\u201d is usually implied or understood and can be omitted.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><u>Example<\/u>: The participants were asked <u>whether<\/u> (or not) they felt any discomfort after the treatment.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The word \u201cif,\u201d on the other hand, is generally used in conditional statements, that is, to refer to a state or an event that may or may not occur.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><u>Example<\/u>: <u>If<\/u> the results are inconclusive, the experiment should be repeated.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The reason these two words are often confused is that in casual speech, it is considered acceptable to use \u201cif\u201d instead of \u201cwhether.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><u>Example<\/u>: I wonder <u>if<\/u> he will be willing to help<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">However, this usage of \u201cif\u201d is best avoided in formal academic writing.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>3<em>. Older<\/em> versus <em>elder<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The adjectives \u201colder\u201d and \u201coldest\u201d are broadly used to describe the ages of people, animals, and things. \u201cOlder\u201d is used to imply that the age of a person, animal, or object is greater than that of another, while \u201coldest\u201d is used to imply that the age of an individual is greatest among those of three or more individuals.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><u>Example<\/u>:<\/p>\n<ol style=\"list-style-type:lower-alpha;\">\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\">They are <u>older<\/u> than all the other participants<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\">He is the <u>oldest<\/u> student in the class.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The words \u201celder\u201d and \u201celdest,\u201d on the other hand, are specifically used while comparing the ages of people belonging to the same family.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><u>Example<\/u>:<\/p>\n<ol style=\"list-style-type:lower-alpha;\">\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\">He has two <u>elder<\/u> sisters<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\">She is the <u>eldest<\/u> of three siblings.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The word \u201celder\u201d is also used in the context of professional relationships, as a synonym for \u201csenior.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><u>Example<\/u>: She is the elder partner in the business.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cElder\u201d may also be used as a noun to refer to a senior or influential person in a community, tribe, or family.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><u>Example<\/u>: The village <u>elders<\/u> convened a meeting to discuss the employment situation.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">While \u201colder\u201d can refer to persons or things, \u201celder\u201d is used only in reference to people.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Other commonly confused terms include <a href=\"https:\/\/www.editage.com\/insights\/scientific-writing-a-number-of-and-the-number-of\/\">Scientific writing: &#8220;A number of&#8221; and &#8220;The number of&#8221;.<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>In a previous post, we have looked at some commonly confused words in scientific writing.
