
{"id":1880,"date":"2014-08-11T09:23:56","date_gmt":"2014-08-11T09:23:56","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.editage.com\/insights\/doaj-takes-steps-to-keep-predatory-publishers-at-bay\/"},"modified":"2025-04-28T05:32:58","modified_gmt":"2025-04-28T05:32:58","slug":"doaj-takes-steps-to-keep-predatory-publishers-at-bay","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.editage.com\/insights\/doaj-takes-steps-to-keep-predatory-publishers-at-bay","title":{"rendered":"DOAJ takes steps to keep predatory publishers at bay"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size:14px;\"><span style=\"font-family:verdana,geneva,sans-serif;\">The Directory of Open Access Journals (DOAJ), a website that lists <a href=\"https:\/\/www.editage.com\/insights\/open-access-a-global-movement\/\">open access<\/a> journals, has <a href=\"http:\/\/doajournals.wordpress.com\/2014\/05\/29\/a-note-about-reapplications\/\">announced<\/a>\u00a0that all the journals listed in their directory will need to reapply to ensure that they meet the newer and stricter criteria, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nature.com\/news\/open-access-website-gets-tough-1.15674\"><em>Nature<\/em><\/a>\u00a0reported.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size:14px;\"><span style=\"font-family:verdana,geneva,sans-serif;\">DOAJ, which was started in 2003 and now comprises over 10,000 journals, has been criticized for poor quality control. <a href=\"http:\/\/citesandinsights.info\/civ14i7.pdf\">According to Walt Crawford<\/a>, a retired library systems analyst in Livermore, California, the DOAJ currently includes around 900 titles that Jeffrey Beall, the\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 14px;\">librarian at\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 14px;\">the University of Colorado Denver, has included in a blacklist of potential <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.editage.com\/insights\/beware-of-bogus-publishers\" style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 14px;\">predatory journals<\/a><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 14px;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size:14px;\"><span style=\"font-family:verdana,geneva,sans-serif;\">The managing director of the DOAJ, Lars Bj\u00f8rnshauge, has taken steps to weed out potential predatory journals by asking all the listed journals to provide detailed information about the journal, their editorial process, digital archiving policy, and content licensing.
