And the journal impact factor (IF) is the most widely recognized indicator of journal prestige and influence. Accordingly, many people choose which journals to publish in based largely on the IF.<sup>1<\/sup><\/span><span style=\"font-size: 14px;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><br style=\"font-family: GandhiSansRegular; font-size: 14px;\" \/><br style=\"font-family: GandhiSansRegular; font-size: 14px;\" \/><strong><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 14px;\">Calculation of IF\u00a0<\/span><\/strong><br style=\"font-family: GandhiSansRegular; font-size: 14px;\" \/><br style=\"font-family: GandhiSansRegular; font-size: 14px;\" \/><span style=\"font-family:verdana,geneva,sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size:14px;\">The IF is basically a ratio. The IF provides library administrators with a tool to decide which journals to retain in their collections and which new ones to acquire \u00a0 for their libraries.<\/span><\/div>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Misuse of the impact factor\" class=\"media-element file-default\" style=\"font-size: 12px; float: left;\" title=\"Misuse of the impact factor\" src=\"https:\/\/insights.cactusglobal.com\/sites\/default\/files\/Misuse%20of%20the%20impact%20factor.png\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 12px; font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14px;\">3.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 14px;\"><strong>Academic evaluation<\/strong>:<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 12px; font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14px;\">\u00a0The IF is often used in the process of academic evaluations of researchers for tenure, grants, funding, etc. However, this use is incorrect because the IF is only meant to indicate the quality of an entire journal, not the quality of individual articles published in the journal.<\/span><sup style=\"font-family: GandhiSansRegular;\">3<\/sup><span style=\"font-size: 14px;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 14px;\">Beware while using the IF<\/span><\/strong><span style=\"font-size: 14px;\"><strong style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif;\"><font class=\"txtbold\" style=\"font-weight: bold; font-family: GandhiSansRegular; font-size: 14px;\">\u00a0<\/font><\/strong><\/span><br style=\"font-family: GandhiSansRegular; font-size: 14px;\" \/>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14px;\"><span style=\"font-family:verdana,geneva,sans-serif;\">When using the IF to compare or assess journals, it is important to understand the following points:<sup>4-5<\/sup><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"border: 0px; vertical-align: baseline; margin: 0px; padding: 0px; font-family: inherit; font-size: inherit; font-style: inherit; font-variant: inherit; line-height: inherit; text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size:14px;\"><span style=\"font-family:verdana,geneva,sans-serif;\"><font class=\"txtbold\" style=\"font-weight: bold;\">1. The absolute value of a journal\u2019s IF is meaningless<\/font>. For example, a journal with an IF of 2 would not be very impressive in a subject like microbiology, but it would be in oceanography. Specialty journals &#8211; like disease-specific journals or journals focusing on disaster management &#8211; tend to have a low IF value because the journal articles are mostly read and cited by a small specialized audience.<sup>6<\/sup><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"border: 0px; vertical-align: baseline; margin: 0px; padding: 0px; font-family: inherit; font-size: inherit; font-style: inherit; font-variant: inherit; line-height: inherit; text-align: justify;\">\u00a0<\/p>\n<p style=\"border: 0px; vertical-align: baseline; margin: 0px; padding: 0px; font-family: inherit; font-size: inherit; font-style: inherit; font-variant: inherit; line-height: inherit; text-align: justify;\"><strong>2. Disciplinary trends are different<\/strong>. Citation habits vary across different research areas. Therefore, IFs should not be used to compare journals across disciplines. For example, citation frequency is much higher in medicine than in mathematics or engineering; therefore, medical journals have higher IFs than mathematical and engineering journals.<sup>7<\/sup><\/p>\n<p style=\"border: 0px; vertical-align: baseline; margin: 0px; padding: 0px; font-family: inherit; font-size: inherit; font-style: inherit; font-variant: inherit; line-height: inherit; text-align: justify;\">\u00a0<\/p>\n<p style=\"border: 0px; vertical-align: baseline; margin: 0px; padding: 0px; font-family: inherit; font-size: inherit; font-style: inherit; font-variant: inherit; line-height: inherit; text-align: justify;\"><font class=\"txtbold\" style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; font-style: inherit; font-variant: inherit; line-height: inherit; font-weight: bold;\">3. IFs are not very relevant in certain fields<\/font><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; font-style: inherit; font-variant: inherit; line-height: inherit;\">. For example, in computer science, conference proceedings are considered the principal form of scientific publication.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"border: 0px; vertical-align: baseline; margin: 0px; padding: 0px; font-family: inherit; font-size: inherit; font-style: inherit; font-variant: inherit; line-height: inherit; text-align: justify;\">\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><!--pagebreak--><\/p>\n<p style=\"border: 0px; vertical-align: baseline; margin: 0px; padding: 0px; font-family: inherit; font-size: inherit; font-style: inherit; font-variant: inherit; line-height: inherit; text-align: justify;\"><strong><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; font-style: inherit; font-variant: inherit; line-height: inherit;\">4.\u00a0<\/span><\/strong><font class=\"txtbold\" style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; font-style: inherit; font-variant: inherit; line-height: inherit; font-weight: bold;\">Not having an IF doesn\u2019t make a journal unworthy<\/font><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; font-style: inherit; font-variant: inherit; line-height: inherit;\">. Thomson Reuters calculates IFs based on their citation database. The database indexes roughly half of the approximately 25,000 peer-reviewed journals8 believed to be published. The coverage of their database is unevenly distributed as well, with some subject areas better indexed than others. In addition, although it indexes journals from 60 countries, there are not many publications from under-developed countries and only a small number of journals that publish in languages other than English.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"border: 0px; vertical-align: baseline; margin: 0px; padding: 0px; font-family: inherit; font-size: inherit; font-style: inherit; font-variant: inherit; line-height: inherit; text-align: justify;\">\u00a0<\/p>\n<p style=\"border: 0px; vertical-align: baseline; margin: 0px; padding: 0px; font-family: inherit; font-size: inherit; font-style: inherit; font-variant: inherit; line-height: inherit; text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size:14px;\"><span style=\"font-weight: bold; font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-style: inherit; font-variant: inherit; line-height: inherit;\">Changes in journal practice because of the IF<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"demo\" id=\"paginationdemo\" style=\"border: 0px; vertical-align: baseline; margin: 0px; padding: 0px; font-family: GandhiSansRegular; font-size: 14px;\">\n<div class=\"pagedemo _current\" id=\"p2\" style=\"border: 0px; vertical-align: baseline; margin: 20px 0px 0px; padding: 0px; font-family: inherit; font-size: inherit; font-style: inherit; font-variant: inherit; line-height: inherit; text-align: justify;\">\n<p><span style=\"font-family:verdana,geneva,sans-serif;\">The IF is as (if not more) important for journal editors as it is for researchers. The IF is used to measure journal performance, and many journal editors are under pressure to increase their journal\u2019s IF.<sup>9<\/sup>\u00a0Further, IFs can be manipulated.<sup>3,10-12<\/sup>\u00a0For example, review articles have been found to attract the most number of citations, so journals may try to publish more review articles to increase their IF. Journal editors may select articles on the basis of how likely they are to be cited. Journals may also ask authors to cite other papers from the journal (called \u201cself-citations\u201d).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<div><strong style=\"font-family: inherit; font-size: inherit; font-style: inherit; font-variant: inherit; line-height: inherit;\"><span style=\"font-family:verdana,geneva,sans-serif;\">Alternatives to the IF<\/span><\/strong><\/div>\n<div>\u00a0<\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-size:14px;\"><span style=\"font-family:verdana,geneva,sans-serif;\">The IF ruled the roost for several decades. However, alternative indicators of journal prestige have been developed in recent years. It has been found that all of these indicators correlate closely with each other. In other words, journal rankings based on these indicators tend to be similar, though there may be differences in the absolute journal rankings. Thus, it eliminates variations found in JIF wherein the IFs are high in certain fields and low in others. They calculate several other metrics as well, like citation potential in the journal\u2019s subject field.<br \/>Why it\u2019s useful: SNIP is a much more reliable indicator than the JIF for comparing journals among disciplines. ES is calculated over a 5-year period. Like SNIP, it also normalizes citations by field. Finally, it tries to mathematically model the time that a researcher spends with each journal. The decision on which journal to send your manuscript to should not rest solely on the IF. It is especially important to remember that a journal with a narrow focus (e.g., Diagnostic Molecular Pathology) may have a lower IF than a more broad-based journal (e.g., Journal of Pathology).
