In attendance were about 120 professionals, and in keeping with this year\u2019s theme,\u00a0<em>Editing at the Crossroads<\/em>, many of the workshops and seminars addressed the evolving nature of the publishing landscape and how copyeditors can stay up-to-date.<\/p>\n<p>In his workshop on\u00a0<em>Rewriting and Substantive Editing<\/em>, writing and editorial consultant Andrew Steeds advocated that copyeditors should refrain from over-editing, an approach that can save the editor time; and the author, frustration. Martin Delahunty, Associate Director from Nature Publishing Group\u2019s, presented a fascinating, tightly-paced seminar\u00a0titled\u00a0<em>Open Science and Future Trends in Digital Journals<\/em>\u00a0wherein\u00a0he\u00a0took the audience through the latest trends in STM publishing, concluding with what copyeditors can anticipate from\u00a0the evolving publishing landscape.<\/p>\n<p>There were many sessions aimed at those new to the industry as well as those which taught new skills (<em>How to succeed as a freelancer<\/em>,\u00a0<em>Finance for freelancers<\/em>,<em>Setting up an office for \u00a3250 from scratch<\/em>, and\u00a0<em>Medical Writing: A practical Introduction<\/em>). Another memorable workshop was\u00a0<em>Social Media for Copyeditors<\/em>\u00a0by Julia Sandford-Cooke, who shared tips on how freelance copyeditors and writers can use social media sites like Facebook, Twitter, and LinkedIn, as a business development tool.<\/p>\n<p>One highlight of the conference was the eagerly anticipated Whitcombe Lecture by Carol Fisher Saller, author of\u00a0<em>The Subversive Copyeditor\u00a0<\/em>and editor of the\u00a0<em>Chicago Manual of Style Online\u2019s<\/em>\u00a0Q&amp;A.\u00a0Ms. Saller had a motivating message to copyeditors on how to deal with changing publishing technologies: learn, adapt, and grow.<\/p>\n<p>An engaging and memorable meeting!<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>CACTUS\/Editage participated in the 24th\u00a0Annual Congress of the Society for Editors and Proofreaders (SfEP) held at the University of Exeter from August 31stto September 2nd, 2013.
