Government agencies, academic institutions, and publishers have taken to initiating, fortifying and updating\u00a0research integrity measures. Here we review some of these recent research integrity initiatives.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p paraeid=\"{3d0dc75b-c0fb-45ac-baf7-4fcba500bba6}{73}\" paraid=\"1083942766\"><strong>1. National\/regional policies and initiatives\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p paraeid=\"{3d0dc75b-c0fb-45ac-baf7-4fcba500bba6}{73}\" paraid=\"1083942766\">Ensuring research integrity is a matter of national importance, and many countries are actively engaged in creating and updating related policies.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p paraeid=\"{3d0dc75b-c0fb-45ac-baf7-4fcba500bba6}{97}\" paraid=\"410501974\">1.1 European Union\u00a0<\/p>\n<p paraeid=\"{3d0dc75b-c0fb-45ac-baf7-4fcba500bba6}{107}\" paraid=\"1047754866\">The European Commission\u2019s Horizon 2020 invested in programs and initiatives to develop educational materials and resources related to research integrity for users within and outside Europe, e.g., <a href=\"https:\/\/www.path2integrity.eu\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Path2Integrity<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/h2020integrity.eu\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">INTEGRITY<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.embassy.science\/training\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">VIRT2UE<\/a>. Another project it gave rise to was the <a href=\"https:\/\/sops4ri.eu\/toolbox\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">SOPs4RI Toolbox<\/a>, a set of guidelines that funders and research institutions can use to develop their own research integrity promotion plans.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p paraeid=\"{3d0dc75b-c0fb-45ac-baf7-4fcba500bba6}{181}\" paraid=\"1811056714\">1.2 United States\u00a0<\/p>\n<p paraeid=\"{3d0dc75b-c0fb-45ac-baf7-4fcba500bba6}{191}\" paraid=\"526230990\">In the United States, the Office for Research Integrity (ORI) develops policies and regulations related to ethical research. The Scientific Integrity Fast-Track Action Committee of The National Science and Technology Council released a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.whitehouse.gov\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/01-22-Protecting_the_Integrity_of_Government_Science.pdf\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Science Integrity Task Force report<\/a>, calling on policy-makers to develop, implement, and update scientific integrity policies.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p paraeid=\"{3d0dc75b-c0fb-45ac-baf7-4fcba500bba6}{208}\" paraid=\"1674140020\">1.3 Japan\u00a0<\/p>\n<p paraeid=\"{3d0dc75b-c0fb-45ac-baf7-4fcba500bba6}{218}\" paraid=\"267866956\">The Office for Research Integrity Promotion, Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT) keeps updating <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mext.go.jp\/content\/20210521-mxt_kiban02-000004257_2.pdf\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">initiatives<\/a> for the prevention of misconduct in research in Japan since 2006. As part of MEXT\u2019s \u201cResearch Integrity Promotion Program,\u201d Japanese funding bodies collaborate to develop and disseminate research integrity education materials and maintain a network for research integrity officers\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p paraeid=\"{3d0dc75b-c0fb-45ac-baf7-4fcba500bba6}{233}\" paraid=\"897115251\">1.4 Africa\u00a0<\/p>\n<p paraeid=\"{3d0dc75b-c0fb-45ac-baf7-4fcba500bba6}{243}\" paraid=\"377327354\">The African Union has <a href=\"https:\/\/au.int\/sites\/default\/files\/newsevents\/workingdocuments\/33178-wd-stisa-english_-_final.pdf\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">prioritized the promotion of ethics and research integrity<\/a> in their 2024 strategic plan, Science, Technology, and Innovation Strategy for Africa 2024.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p paraeid=\"{fbbc32b3-231f-4566-b9b5-19dd205ea9bc}{3}\" paraid=\"491096866\">\u00a0<\/p>\n<p paraeid=\"{fbbc32b3-231f-4566-b9b5-19dd205ea9bc}{7}\" paraid=\"1478115225\"><strong>2. Institution-level initiatives\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p paraeid=\"{fbbc32b3-231f-4566-b9b5-19dd205ea9bc}{21}\" paraid=\"590067119\">In a recent <a href=\"https:\/\/scholarlykitchen.sspnet.org\/2024\/03\/28\/putting-research-integrity-checks-where-they-belong\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">post<\/a> on Scholarly Kitchen, Angela Cochran, Vice President of Publishing at the American Society of Clinical Oncology, makes a strong argument for institutions (where researchers are employed) to take responsibility for conducting integrity checks.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p paraeid=\"{fbbc32b3-231f-4566-b9b5-19dd205ea9bc}{48}\" paraid=\"1614909678\">While many institutions and universities have a long way to go (many do not have an equivalent of an integrity officer), several have taken steps in the right direction, as listed below.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p paraeid=\"{fbbc32b3-231f-4566-b9b5-19dd205ea9bc}{62}\" paraid=\"507283774\">2.1 Universities\u2019 research integrity resources\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p paraeid=\"{fbbc32b3-231f-4566-b9b5-19dd205ea9bc}{76}\" paraid=\"1014504467\">Columbia University\u2019s Research and Data Integrity (<a href=\"https:\/\/research.columbia.edu\/ReaDI-Program\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">ReaDI<\/a>) program provides access to research integrity resources, e.g., online training in handling digital scientific images. The University\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/facultyhandbook.columbia.edu\/content\/appendix-i-columbia-university-institutional-policy-misconduct-research\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Institutional Policy on Research Misconduct<\/a> ensures that misconduct allegations are handled appropriately and in line with funder requirements.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p paraeid=\"{fbbc32b3-231f-4566-b9b5-19dd205ea9bc}{130}\" paraid=\"1422557862\">Indiana University runs a <a href=\"https:\/\/research.iu.edu\/campaigns\/educational-initiatives\/research-integrity-webinar-series.html\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">research integrity webinar series<\/a>, where the Research Integrity Office staff and faculty members discuss real cases of research misconduct.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p paraeid=\"{fbbc32b3-231f-4566-b9b5-19dd205ea9bc}{149}\" paraid=\"1962296690\">2.2 Universities\u2019 statements on research integrity\u00a0<\/p>\n<p aria-level=\"1\" paraeid=\"{fbbc32b3-231f-4566-b9b5-19dd205ea9bc}{159}\" paraid=\"2078045474\" role=\"heading\">To show their commitment to the cause of ethical research, many universities now provide their statement on research integrity, e.g., the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bristol.ac.uk\/red\/research-governance\/annual-statement-on-research-integrity\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">University of Bristol<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/researchsupport.admin.ox.ac.uk\/sitefiles\/research-integrity-2023-annual-statement.pdf\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">University of Oxford<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p paraeid=\"{fbbc32b3-231f-4566-b9b5-19dd205ea9bc}{175}\" paraid=\"713755643\">\u00a0<\/p>\n<p paraeid=\"{fbbc32b3-231f-4566-b9b5-19dd205ea9bc}{179}\" paraid=\"2116302888\"><strong>3. Scholarly societies\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p paraeid=\"{fbbc32b3-231f-4566-b9b5-19dd205ea9bc}{189}\" paraid=\"343114418\">Scholarly societies can and should provide guidance for reporting responsible research and data sharing. For example, the American Geophysical Union (AGU) has meticulously collated and compiled <a href=\"https:\/\/www.agu.org\/Publish-with-AGU\/Publish\/Author-Resources\/Data-and-Software-for-Authors\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">best practices<\/a> for sharing and referencing data, offering guidance and assistance to its members. Similarly, the American Historical Association recently updated their <a href=\"https:\/\/www.agu.org\/Publish-with-AGU\/Publish\/Author-Resources\/Data-and-Software-for-Authors\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Statement on Standards of Professional Conduct<\/a>, addressing aspects such plagiarism in considerable detail.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p paraeid=\"{fbbc32b3-231f-4566-b9b5-19dd205ea9bc}{219}\" paraid=\"504435199\">\u00a0<\/p>\n<p paraeid=\"{fbbc32b3-231f-4566-b9b5-19dd205ea9bc}{223}\" paraid=\"701345356\"><strong>4. Journal initiatives\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p paraeid=\"{fbbc32b3-231f-4566-b9b5-19dd205ea9bc}{233}\" paraid=\"1889849563\">Academic journals are increasingly becoming cognizant of the importance of a culture of research integrity culture and are spearheading initiatives for research integrity promotion.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p paraeid=\"{fbbc32b3-231f-4566-b9b5-19dd205ea9bc}{245}\" paraid=\"109483474\">4.1 Encouraging open practices\u00a0<\/p>\n<p paraeid=\"{fbbc32b3-231f-4566-b9b5-19dd205ea9bc}{255}\" paraid=\"2053056111\">Publishers and journals are encouraging open sharing of raw data, details of the procedures and equipment used to generate data, and data collection and statistical techniques applied, which improves transparency and reproducibility. <a href=\"https:\/\/plos.org\/open-science\/open-methods\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Open Methods by PLOS<\/a> exemplifies these practices.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p paraeid=\"{7a0603c9-19f0-4ebb-a158-0014f5364963}{51}\" paraid=\"796740170\">4.2 Research integrity teams\u00a0<\/p>\n<p paraeid=\"{7a0603c9-19f0-4ebb-a158-0014f5364963}{61}\" paraid=\"1847689195\">Many publishers have teams to advise their editors, reviewers, and authors on ethical conduct in research and publications and on resolving research integrity problems. If needed, they also carry out investigations to resolve complex cases. For example, Springer Nature has a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.springernature.com\/gp\/editors\/research-integrity\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Research Integrity group<\/a>, and BMJ has a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bmj.com\/company\/researchintegrity\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">research integrity and publication ethics team<\/a>.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p paraeid=\"{7a0603c9-19f0-4ebb-a158-0014f5364963}{85}\" paraid=\"2123751225\">4.3 Tools for checking misconduct before publication\u00a0<\/p>\n<p paraeid=\"{7a0603c9-19f0-4ebb-a158-0014f5364963}{95}\" paraid=\"1754419396\">Tools that can help publishers and editors in their editorial decision-making are making waves. STM Solutions has developed a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.stm-assoc.org\/stm-integrity-hub-launches-new-research-integrity-tool\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Duplicate Submission Checker<\/a>, which allows publishers and editors to detect duplicate submissions across journals and submissions systems.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p paraeid=\"{7a0603c9-19f0-4ebb-a158-0014f5364963}{106}\" paraid=\"1946979204\">\u00a0<\/p>\n<p paraeid=\"{7a0603c9-19f0-4ebb-a158-0014f5364963}{110}\" paraid=\"439379634\"><strong>5. Impetus to research integrity sleuths: Scientific Integrity Fund\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p paraeid=\"{7a0603c9-19f0-4ebb-a158-0014f5364963}{124}\" paraid=\"1370790699\">While most hail the Hercule Poirots and Miss Marples of research integrity, these <a href=\"https:\/\/www.editage.com\/insights\/data-sleuths-and-their-role-in-maintaining-research-integrity\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">whistleblowing integrity sleuths<\/a> are often subjected to online abuse, personal attacks, and worse still, lawsuits. Dedicated scientists should feel free to raise concerns without fearing threats of lawsuits. So far, these well-meaning researchers have been relying on avenues like crowdfunding to financially support their cases. Now, Yun-Fang Juan, a data scientist-turned investor, has started a<a href=\"https:\/\/www.science.org\/content\/article\/science-integrity-sleuths-welcome-legal-aid-fund-whistleblowers\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\"> $1 million Scientific Integrity Fund<\/a> to help whistleblowers pay the legal costs of being sued for flagging misconduct.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p paraeid=\"{7a0603c9-19f0-4ebb-a158-0014f5364963}{168}\" paraid=\"208441552\">\u00a0<\/p>\n<p paraeid=\"{7a0603c9-19f0-4ebb-a158-0014f5364963}{172}\" paraid=\"979837098\"><strong>6. Key collaborations\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p paraeid=\"{7a0603c9-19f0-4ebb-a158-0014f5364963}{180}\" paraid=\"1543944970\">6.1 Open retraction data: Crossref X Retraction Watch\u00a0<\/p>\n<p aria-level=\"2\" paraeid=\"{7a0603c9-19f0-4ebb-a158-0014f5364963}{200}\" paraid=\"621063363\" role=\"heading\">Crossref is a nonprofit open digital infrastructure organization and the world\u2019s largest registry of digital object identifiers (DOIs) and metadata for the scholarly research community. Meanwhile, Retraction Watch is a blog that reports on retractions. Late last year, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.crossref.org\/blog\/news-crossref-and-retraction-watch\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Crossref acquired Retraction Watch data<\/a>. This collaboration strengthens Crossref\u2019s retraction data and benefits from Crossref\u2019s technological expertise to enhance the database\u2019s accessibility to the community. Users can download the open dataset and integrate it into various systems for easy access to retracted articles (you can try it <a href=\"http:\/\/retractiondatabase.org\/RetractionSearch.aspx?\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">here<\/a>).\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p paraeid=\"{7a0603c9-19f0-4ebb-a158-0014f5364963}{244}\" paraid=\"912099445\">6.2 Screening problematic manuscripts: STM Solutions X PubPeer\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p paraeid=\"{8bed257a-fa85-424b-94f6-167bc6d956e8}{3}\" paraid=\"1293706536\">The collaboration between STM Solutions and PubPeer marks a significant advancement in safeguarding research integrity within the scholarly community. With the integration of PubPeer\u2019s database with STM Integrity\u2019s Hub, researchers and publishers gain access to a wealth of expert commentary and post-publication reviews, as well as valuable tools like the paper mill checker, enhancing the Hub\u2019s ability to identify problematic manuscripts early in the publication process.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p paraeid=\"{8bed257a-fa85-424b-94f6-167bc6d956e8}{13}\" paraid=\"1130385121\">\u00a0<\/p>\n<p paraeid=\"{8bed257a-fa85-424b-94f6-167bc6d956e8}{17}\" paraid=\"1873329026\"><strong>7. Increased support for research on research integrity\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p paraeid=\"{8bed257a-fa85-424b-94f6-167bc6d956e8}{31}\" paraid=\"725029574\">7.1 Grants for research integrity studies\u00a0<\/p>\n<p paraeid=\"{8bed257a-fa85-424b-94f6-167bc6d956e8}{43}\" paraid=\"50767279\">The US ORI awards <a href=\"https:\/\/ori.hhs.gov\/blog\/fiscal-year-fy-2024-notice-funding-opportunity-announcement-ensuring-research-integrity\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">research and conference grants<\/a> encouraging empirical research on factors that affect integrity in research. Universities are also offering funds for research in various aspects of research integrity. For example, the University of Sydney announced a <a href=\"https:\/\/ori.hhs.gov\/blog\/fiscal-year-fy-2024-notice-funding-opportunity-announcement-ensuring-research-integrity\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">scholarship<\/a> for research on problematic original articles in high-impact factor molecular cancer journals.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p paraeid=\"{8bed257a-fa85-424b-94f6-167bc6d956e8}{63}\" paraid=\"123766916\">7.2 Calls for a new discipline: FoSci\u00a0<\/p>\n<p paraeid=\"{8bed257a-fa85-424b-94f6-167bc6d956e8}{75}\" paraid=\"322498023\">With the rise of AI tools, the types and scale of misconduct are evolving, necessitating new approaches to detect and address problematic papers. Suggestions have been made for embracing a new field of study to address these challenges, namely, \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/scholarlykitchen.sspnet.org\/2024\/04\/02\/guest-post-fosci-the-emerging-field-of-forensic-scientometrics\/?utm_source=twitter&amp;utm_medium=social&amp;utm_term=digitalsci&amp;utm_campaign=8fb7980a-bffb-42da-9d35-0ee3bb10339a\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Forensic Scientometrics<\/a>\u201d (FoSci). While the work being done to uphold research in research integrity by individual researchers, publishers, and universities is not new, a dedicated discipline with this name is a novel idea.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p paraeid=\"{8bed257a-fa85-424b-94f6-167bc6d956e8}{116}\" paraid=\"1195528301\">\u00a0<\/p>\n<p paraeid=\"{deacfb00-de1f-4edd-ba28-4c52998d5703}{217}\" paraid=\"972005547\"><strong>8. These trends of poor reproducibility are hardly shocking, given the continued trends of unethical practices in research, writing, and publishing. <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-size:12.0pt\"><span style=\"line-height:115%\"><span style=\"font-family:&quot;Times New Roman&quot;,&quot;serif&quot;\"><span style=\"color:#252423\">In the past few months alone, <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thecrimson.com\/article\/2024\/1\/12\/dana-farber-research-misconduct-allegations\/\" style=\"color:blue; text-decoration:underline\"><span style=\"font-size:12.0pt\"><span style=\"line-height:115%\"><span style=\"font-family:&quot;Times New Roman&quot;,&quot;serif&quot;\">high-profile researchers and their institutions<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-size:12.0pt\"><span style=\"line-height:115%\"><span style=\"font-family:&quot;Times New Roman&quot;,&quot;serif&quot;\"><span style=\"color:#252423\"> have come under the scanner for data manipulation, thousands of papers produced by paper mills have been<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/retractionwatch.com\/2023\/12\/19\/hindawi-reveals-process-for-retracting-more-than-8000-paper-mill-articles\/\" style=\"color:blue; text-decoration:underline\"><span style=\"font-size:12.0pt\"><span style=\"line-height:115%\"><span style=\"font-family:&quot;Times New Roman&quot;,&quot;serif&quot;\">retracted<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-size:12.0pt\"><span style=\"line-height:115%\"><span style=\"font-family:&quot;Times New Roman&quot;,&quot;serif&quot;\"><span style=\"color:#252423\">, and a paper with <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.frontiersin.org\/articles\/10.3389\/fcell.2023.1339390\/full\" style=\"color:blue; text-decoration:underline\"><span style=\"font-size:12.0pt\"><span style=\"line-height:115%\"><span style=\"font-family:&quot;Times New Roman&quot;,&quot;serif&quot;\">absurd AI-generated images<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-size:12.0pt\"><span style=\"line-height:115%\"><span style=\"font-family:&quot;Times New Roman&quot;,&quot;serif&quot;\"><span style=\"color:#252423\"> was published (and later retracted).
