Bias affects r<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span>esearch<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span>, from <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span>the <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span>inception<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span> of the study<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span> to <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span>the <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span>research design<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span> and all the steps of the<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span> research process<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span>, as well as peer review<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span> and the<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span> publication and citation of publications<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span>.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span> Unwittingly, researchers <\/span><\/span><\/span>may color<\/span><\/span><\/span> their research<\/span><\/span><\/span> by making quick judgments based on <\/span><\/span><\/span>their<\/span><\/span><\/span> own<\/span><\/span><\/span> experiences, ideas, and prejudices.<\/span><\/span><\/span> This is known as <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span>unconscious bias<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span> (or implicit bias).<\/span><\/span><\/span> Meanwhile, conscious bias (or explicit bias) is deliberate. <\/span><\/span><\/span>Both types <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span>of bias affect the validity and reliability of research findings.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

In medicine, in particular, <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span>skewed data or <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span>data misinterpretation has serious consequences for practice.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span> <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span>While b<\/span><\/span><\/span>ias<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span> is difficult to <\/span><\/span><\/span>eliminate altogether<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span>, several measures may be adopted<\/span><\/span><\/span> to minimize <\/span><\/span><\/span>it<\/span><\/span><\/span> when planning and conducting research<\/span><\/span><\/span>.<\/span><\/span><\/span> One of these is blinding<\/span><\/span><\/span>.
