
{"id":2651,"date":"2019-05-21T08:55:21","date_gmt":"2019-05-21T08:55:21","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.editage.com\/insights\/the-end-of-my-phd-journey-was-slightly-anticlimactic\/"},"modified":"2025-01-15T06:35:14","modified_gmt":"2025-01-15T06:35:14","slug":"the-end-of-my-phd-journey-was-slightly-anticlimactic","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.editage.com\/insights\/the-end-of-my-phd-journey-was-slightly-anticlimactic","title":{"rendered":"The end of my PhD journey was slightly anticlimactic"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"margin:0cm 0cm 10pt\"><span style=\"font-size:11pt\"><span style=\"line-height:115%\"><span style=\"font-family:Calibri,sans-serif\">In early 2007, my secondary school Biology teacher predicted I\u2019d \u201cdrop out of my PhD, go into stand-up, and have my own reality TV show.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin:0cm 0cm 10pt\"><span style=\"font-size:11pt\"><span style=\"line-height:115%\"><span style=\"font-family:Calibri,sans-serif\">Now, in December 2017, I can finally \u2013 definitively \u2013 say that he was totally wrong.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin:0cm 0cm 10pt\"><span style=\"font-size:11pt\"><span style=\"line-height:115%\"><span style=\"font-family:Calibri,sans-serif\">(Part of me wishes he wasn\u2019t. My reality TV show would\u2019ve been a cross between <i>Curb Your Enthusiasm<\/i> and <i>The Big Bang Theory<\/i>. It would have been excellent.)<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin:0cm 0cm 10pt\"><span style=\"font-size:11pt\"><span style=\"line-height:115%\"><span style=\"font-family:Calibri,sans-serif\">Anyway, I defended my PhD this week and was met with approval. I still need to submit my paperwork to the graduate school \u2013 forms, money, photocopies of everything \u2013 but the highest energy barrier has been vaulted.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin:0cm 0cm 10pt\"><span style=\"font-size:11pt\"><span style=\"line-height:115%\"><span style=\"font-family:Calibri,sans-serif\">For the rest of the week, I\u2019ve been working through the excess refreshments I brought to my defense, namely croissants and non-alcoholic eggnog. I took a day off to go into Manhattan and lounge around Aire Ancient Baths, which was the most decadent thing I could think of doing (Aire Ancient Baths actually featured in \u2018John Wick Ch1\u2019 as part of the \u2018ultra-decadent nightclub\u2019 scene, which raised my opinion of the locale). Then I returned to business as usual. Having drunk several gallons of eggnog, I still don\u2019t understand its appeal\u2026 but I feel closer to understanding America in general.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin:0cm 0cm 10pt\"><span style=\"font-size:11pt\"><span style=\"line-height:115%\"><span style=\"font-family:Calibri,sans-serif\">I wasn\u2019t sure how I\u2019d feel after defending my PhD. Would I be disillusioned and depressed? Would I be indifferent? I ended up feeling happier than I expected. It definitely felt like I\u2019d achieved something.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin:0cm 0cm 10pt\"><span style=\"font-size:11pt\"><span style=\"line-height:115%\"><span style=\"font-family:Calibri,sans-serif\">It\u2019s been a weird academic year. Around this time last year, my PhD timeline shifted forward by 6-12 months, and I had to adjust to a new reality. I\u2019d be staying on the Eastern Seaboard while the rest of my lab moved south. I got the unusual privilege of a calm, research-lite Fall semester to focus on writing-up my thesis. Most people finish their PhDs in a flurry of advancing deadlines and semi-realistic expectations. For the first time in several years I felt an acute absence of stress as I worked through my thesis chapters. It meant the ending was slightly anticlimactic.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin:0cm 0cm 10pt\"><span style=\"font-size:11pt\"><span style=\"line-height:115%\"><span style=\"font-family:Calibri,sans-serif\">With time I\u2019ll reflect upon the PhD and my choices during grad school.
