
{"id":2693,"date":"2019-05-22T11:08:03","date_gmt":"2019-05-22T11:08:03","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.editage.com\/insights\/the-question-you-ask-yourself-most-at-the-start-of-your-phd\/"},"modified":"2025-04-05T13:08:55","modified_gmt":"2025-04-05T13:08:55","slug":"the-question-you-ask-yourself-most-at-the-start-of-your-phd","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.editage.com\/insights\/the-question-you-ask-yourself-most-at-the-start-of-your-phd","title":{"rendered":"The question you ask yourself most at the start of your PhD"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"margin: 0in 0in 10pt;\"><span style=\"font-size: 11pt;\"><span style=\"line-height: 115%;\"><span style=\"font-family: Calibri,sans-serif;\">For the last 5 weeks or so, i.e. from the beginning of my PhD, I\u2019ve found that the most common question that I am coming up with is \u201cWhat next?\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0in 0in 10pt;\"><span style=\"font-size: 11pt;\"><span style=\"line-height: 115%;\"><span style=\"font-family: Calibri,sans-serif;\">I feel like I\u2019ve made significant progress in my first month or so of the project; I\u2019ve got a plan for the next 6 months or so (which takes me nicely to the preparation for my Early Stage Assessment at 9 months), and I even know roughly how to achieve my plan. But, I still find myself asking that question, \u201cWhat next?\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0in 0in 10pt;\"><span style=\"font-size: 11pt;\"><span style=\"line-height: 115%;\"><span style=\"font-family: Calibri,sans-serif;\">I know some of the steps that I\u2019ve got to take. I just don\u2019t want to do some of it \u2013 why? I don\u2019t know. Perhaps I\u2019m exhausted and just need some downtime? Perhaps I\u2019m so scared of getting it wrong that I don\u2019t want to start?<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0in 0in 10pt;\"><span style=\"font-size: 11pt;\"><span style=\"line-height: 115%;\"><span style=\"font-family: Calibri,sans-serif;\">I seem to be coming up with excuses not to do things or over-planning to make sure everything is spot on multiple times. For one task in particular, I don\u2019t even have an excuse. I just don\u2019t want to do it. I have this block that I need to get past. I know I don\u2019t know how to do it but I\u2019m not going to learn if I don\u2019t try!<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0in 0in 10pt;\"><span style=\"font-size: 11pt;\"><span style=\"line-height: 115%;\"><span style=\"font-family: Calibri,sans-serif;\">So, I guess right now, I know \u201cWhat next?\u201d Perhaps we do know \u201cWhat next?\u201d more than we care to admit, if we don\u2019t want to do what\u2019s next. There are times I really don\u2019t know \u201cWhat next,\u201d but since I have a plan I can\u2019t say that\u2019s the case now. It\u2019s a nice feeling in a way because I have the direction I\u2019d been working so hard to find, but it\u2019s tough because I\u2019m now facing things that I know I\u2019m not able to do, which means that difficulties are going to be popping up left, right, and centre. I don\u2019t want to fall at small hurdles; I want to be able to do what I set out to do. Unfortunately, that\u2019s not what a PhD is and that\u2019s not what life is.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0in 0in 10pt;\"><span style=\"font-size: 11pt;\"><span style=\"line-height: 115%;\"><span style=\"font-family: Calibri,sans-serif;\">I was telling one of my tutees only a couple of days ago (she\u2019d had a mock that day which had gone horrendously) that we learn more when things don\u2019t go perfectly than when they do. Dealing with and experiencing things that have gone wrong are the best ways to learn and improve for the future. So, I guess I just need to take my own advice, and the logic of a very smart butler from Batman:<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0in 0in 10pt;\"><span style=\"font-size: 11pt;\"><span style=\"line-height: 115%;\"><span style=\"font-family: Calibri,sans-serif;\"><i>\u201cWhy do we fall? So we can learn to pick ourselves up.\u201d ~ Alfred Pennyworth<\/i><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0in 0in 10pt;\"><span style=\"font-size: 11pt;\"><span style=\"line-height: 115%;\"><span style=\"font-family: Calibri,sans-serif;\">Perhaps I shouldn\u2019t be seeing \u201cWhat next?\u201d as a negative question, but as a positive one. I\u2019m keen to work out where to go after I\u2019ve completed each task on my to-do list. I can dwell on the issues of figuring out \u201cWhat next?\u201d or I can flip that around and realise that this is how I\u2019m going to move forward. If I\u2019m not thinking about \u201cWhat next?\u201d then what am I doing and where am I going?<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0in 0in 10pt;\"><span style=\"font-size: 11pt;\"><span style=\"line-height: 115%;\"><span style=\"font-family: Calibri,sans-serif;\">This super common question is something that I think is highly prevalent amongst PhD students, at least judging by the group discussions in a training session I did yesterday on how to be an effective researcher. It was full of relatively new PhD students, many of whom were there to answer \u00a0their versions of the question \u201cWhat next?\u201d \u2013 whether\u00a0 relating to literature searches, planning, supervisor relationships or where to get support.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0in 0in 10pt;\"><span style=\"font-size: 11pt;\"><span style=\"line-height: 115%;\"><span style=\"font-family: Calibri,sans-serif;\">I think it\u2019s time to embrace \u201cWhat next?\u201d and use it to my advantage (and stop coming up with excuses not to do it!)<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><i>Shruti Turner (<\/i><a style=\"color: blue; text-decoration: underline;\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/ShrutiTurner\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><i>@ShrutiTurner<\/i><\/a><i>) is a PhD Researcher at Imperial College London.
