When I applied to various graduate programs in Europe and the States, the current PhD students described the typical first year experience:\u00a0<i>\u201cYou work really hard trying to get your project working \u2013 once it is up and running you can relax a bit.\u201d<\/i><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0in 0in 10pt;\"><span style=\"font-size: 11pt;\"><span style=\"line-height: 115%;\"><span style=\"font-family: Calibri,sans-serif;\">I thought that my first semester was bad. I had to adjust quickly to the teaching, learn how to run quickly from the classroom to the lab, and get settled. Then, in semester 2, I was handed my research project and told \u2013 \u201cCrack on with it.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0in 0in 10pt; text-align: center;\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"center\" title=\"Default Title Text\" src=\"http:\/\/insights.cactusglobal.com\/sites\/default\/files\/First%20year%20scramble-%20The%20worst%20is%20over%20image%201.jpg\" alt=\"Default Alt text\" data-file_info=\"%7B%22fid%22:%228322%22,%22view_mode%22:%22default%22,%22fields%22:%7B%22format%22:%22default%22,%22field_file_image_alt_text%5Bund%5D%5B0%5D%5Bvalue%5D%22:%22Default%20Alt%20text%22,%22field_file_image_title_text%5Bund%5D%5B0%5D%5Bvalue%5D%22:%22Default%20Title%20Text%22,%22field_image_tags%5Bund%5D%5Btextfield%5D%22:%22%22,%22field_image_tags%5Bund%5D%5Bvalue_field%5D%22:%22%5C%22%5C%22%5C%22%5C%22%22%7D,%22type%22:%22media%22%7D\" \/><br \/>\n<em><strong>Winterstorms<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0in 0in 10pt;\"><span style=\"font-size: 11pt;\"><span style=\"line-height: 115%;\"><span style=\"font-family: Calibri,sans-serif;\">In a science PhD, the research projects will make or \u2013 mostly \u2013 break grad students. If you have a series of unsuccessful research projects then your graduation could be delayed by a year or more, or you\u2019ll get fed up and quit. On the other hand, early success on one project means plenty of opportunities for successful projects to grow out of that\u2026 then\u00a0<i>bam<\/i>, you have your thesis. It also makes life easier when you draft the research proposal necessary to advance into PhD candidacy.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0in 0in 10pt;\"><span style=\"font-size: 11pt;\"><span style=\"line-height: 115%;\"><span style=\"font-family: Calibri,sans-serif;\">Right now, life is composed of stupid-hour days and too much bad food from the student centre. Winter has turned my skin into cracked, itchy parchment. The snow has mostly gone (\u2026for now), but I don\u2019t have much of an opportunity to enjoy the fresh air and sunlight. I get up early, and knock-back two espressos before I leave the apartment each morning. I come back late, decompress for a bit on the internet, and then go to sleep.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0in 0in 10pt;\"><span style=\"font-size: 11pt;\"><span style=\"line-height: 115%;\"><span style=\"font-family: Calibri,sans-serif;\">I\u2019m holding up. The research project is actually working. I guess that is worse, in a sense because I have no excuse to \u2018just call it a day\u2019 or \u2018try sleeping on that problem.\u2019 But more importantly the reason I\u2019m working so hard is because I want to, not because I\u2019m being forced to. As I prepare conference abstracts, format spectral data, and draft journal manuscripts I feel that I\u2019m finally hitting the \u201clegitimate academic researcher\u201d jackpot.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0in 0in 10pt;\"><span style=\"font-size: 11pt;\"><span style=\"line-height: 115%;\"><span style=\"font-family: Calibri,sans-serif;\">Slowly I\u2019m passing the data-gathering phase of this particular project and moving into manuscript prep \u2013 the former is labour-intensive and time-consuming; the latter can be accomplished in a coffeeshop whilst listening to Paul Simon albums.
