
{"id":2842,"date":"2019-06-05T11:21:09","date_gmt":"2019-06-05T11:21:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.editage.com\/insights\/a-dis-proven-hypothesis-and-why-its-not-the-end-of-the-world\/"},"modified":"2025-01-15T06:33:11","modified_gmt":"2025-01-15T06:33:11","slug":"a-dis-proven-hypothesis-and-why-its-not-the-end-of-the-world","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.editage.com\/insights\/a-dis-proven-hypothesis-and-why-its-not-the-end-of-the-world","title":{"rendered":"A dis-proven hypothesis and why it&#8217;s not the end of the world"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"margin:0cm 0cm 10pt\"><span style=\"font-size:11pt\"><span style=\"line-height:115%\"><span style=\"font-family:Calibri,sans-serif\"><i>There are two types of people in the world:<\/i><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin:0cm 0cm 10pt\"><span style=\"font-size:11pt\"><span style=\"line-height:115%\"><span style=\"font-family:Calibri,sans-serif\"><i>Those who can extrapolate from incomplete pieces of information.<\/i><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin:0cm 0cm 10pt\"><span style=\"font-size:11pt\"><span style=\"line-height:115%\"><span style=\"font-family:Calibri,sans-serif\"><i>\u2026<\/i><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin:0cm 0cm 10pt\"><span style=\"font-size:11pt\"><span style=\"line-height:115%\"><span style=\"font-family:Calibri,sans-serif\">So the more data I\u2019m collecting for my project, the more \u2018wrong\u2019 my hypothesis is looking.<br \/>And when I say \u2018wrong,\u2019 I mean \u2018we were completely on the wrong path with that one!\u2019<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin:0cm 0cm 10pt\"><span style=\"font-size:11pt\"><span style=\"line-height:115%\"><span style=\"font-family:Calibri,sans-serif\">So far, the majority of my participants aren\u2019t responding the way I anticipated, which is leading me to conclude that perhaps my study was looking at the wrong element this whole time.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin:0cm 0cm 10pt\"><span style=\"font-size:11pt\"><span style=\"line-height:115%\"><span style=\"font-family:Calibri,sans-serif\">But is it the end of the world for my project? Of course not!<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin:0cm 0cm 10pt\"><span style=\"font-size:11pt\"><span style=\"line-height:115%\"><span style=\"font-family:Calibri,sans-serif\">The huge benefit of exploratory qualitative research is that there\u2019s plenty of wiggle room to still \u2018find\u2019 things that are important even if you were looking at the wrong thing. As a result, since my hypothesis was disproven, I can now definitively say, \u2018It\u2019s NOT this, it\u2019s\u00a0THIS!\u2019<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin:0cm 0cm 10pt\"><span style=\"font-size:11pt\"><span style=\"line-height:115%\"><span style=\"font-family:Calibri,sans-serif\">My data is leading me toward a result which is quite clear-cut despite the fact that I didn\u2019t set out to find that result. It just happened to be there. I was surprised by the finding, but there it is.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin:0cm 0cm 10pt\"><span style=\"font-size:11pt\"><span style=\"line-height:115%\"><span style=\"font-family:Calibri,sans-serif\">I was wrong, and in the process of being wrong, I found The \u201cRight Thing\u201d Instead.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin:0cm 0cm 10pt\"><span style=\"font-size:11pt\"><span style=\"line-height:115%\"><span style=\"font-family:Calibri,sans-serif\">Now, for my professors and those of you who will proceed to look at me with judgement and condescension about my \u2018wrong\u2019 hypothesis, I\u2019ve got something to say to you:<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin:0cm 0cm 10pt\"><span style=\"font-size:11pt\"><span style=\"line-height:115%\"><span style=\"font-family:Calibri,sans-serif\">From the beginning, I was led and informed by stakeholders. I built my hypothesis on information given to me by people experiencing the phenomena I wanted to study. I used their language, their terminology, and looked at the academic literature. At the beginning of my project, everything looked consistent and handy-dandy. I followed academic rigor and developed a project that was watertight. It stood up to scrutiny, it was beta-tested, stamped off by TWO ethics committees, and looked over by the health system\u2019s CO. And everyone. I repeat, EVERYONE I am working with, was convinced I\u2019d find information on my hypothesis. My professors, the stakeholders, the wider community, and the academic community, were all walking down the path of my hypothesis.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin:0cm 0cm 10pt\"><span style=\"font-size:11pt\"><span style=\"line-height:115%\"><span style=\"font-family:Calibri,sans-serif\">And then I started collecting the data.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin:0cm 0cm 10pt\"><span style=\"font-size:11pt\"><span style=\"line-height:115%\"><span style=\"font-family:Calibri,sans-serif\">Turns out, the hypothesis was wrong. The literature, in some aspects of academic writing, is wrong. The stakeholders made an incorrect conclusion BECAUSE they didn\u2019t have the data that I have. I have found the truth. My exploratory data collection explored, and has found something incredibly useful instead.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin:0cm 0cm 10pt\"><span style=\"font-size:11pt\"><span style=\"line-height:115%\"><span style=\"font-family:Calibri,sans-serif\">It would be intellectually dishonest of me to edit my thesis title and hypothesis, after the fact, to make it look like I was right all along. That negates the importance of the community\u2019s input, and the consequences of this finding.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin:0cm 0cm 10pt\"><span style=\"font-size:11pt\"><span style=\"line-height:115%\"><span style=\"font-family:Calibri,sans-serif\">No, I\u2019m going to be honest and declare that the path I was on from the start was incorrect, and that we can course-adjust to make sure that future work is on the right track from here on.
