Although there were familiar faces (I am not entirely new to the\u00a0<a style=\"color: blue; text-decoration: underline;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.educ.cam.ac.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Faculty of Education<\/a>), embarking on the MEd course is a huge milestone in my journey.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0in 0in 10pt;\"><span style=\"font-size: 11pt;\"><span style=\"line-height: 115%;\"><span style=\"font-family: Calibri,sans-serif;\">All the students gathered in the auditorium for a welcome speech and an introduction to Homerton College (my home for the next three years). Although full of excitement, I also felt nervous.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0in 0in 10pt;\"><span style=\"font-size: 11pt;\"><span style=\"line-height: 115%;\"><span style=\"font-family: Calibri,sans-serif;\">Homerton\u2019s motto is \u201cRespice Finem.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0in 0in 10pt;\"><span style=\"font-size: 11pt;\"><span style=\"line-height: 115%;\"><span style=\"font-family: Calibri,sans-serif;\">Look to the end.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0in 0in 10pt;\"><span style=\"font-size: 11pt;\"><span style=\"line-height: 115%;\"><span style=\"font-family: Calibri,sans-serif;\">Make your life count.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0in 0in 10pt;\"><span style=\"font-size: 11pt;\"><span style=\"line-height: 115%;\"><span style=\"font-family: Calibri,sans-serif;\">Do whatever you do cautiously.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0in 0in 10pt;\"><span style=\"font-size: 11pt;\"><span style=\"line-height: 115%;\"><span style=\"font-family: Calibri,sans-serif;\">Consider the consequences of your actions.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0in 0in 10pt;\"><span style=\"font-size: 11pt;\"><span style=\"line-height: 115%;\"><span style=\"font-family: Calibri,sans-serif;\">Well, safe to say, in coming to\u00a0<a style=\"color: blue; text-decoration: underline;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cam.ac.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Cambridge University<\/a>\u00a0I had to count the cost.\u00a0Now that I am here, I must look ahead, cautiously consider my actions, and make the next few years count.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0in 0in 10pt;\"><span style=\"font-size: 11pt;\"><span style=\"line-height: 115%;\"><span style=\"font-family: Calibri,sans-serif;\">One of our induction talks was to assure us all. We are not impostors but rather individuals who have earned their place. As I sat listening, I smiled (she read my mind). Although I knew fully well that I had earned my place,\u00a0I felt like an impostor.\u00a0I looked around the room and noticed there were only 4 other black students. This led to writing the\u00a0poem below:<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<h4 style=\"margin: 0in 0in 10pt;\"><span style=\"font-size: 11pt;\"><span style=\"line-height: 115%;\"><span style=\"font-family: Calibri,sans-serif;\"><b><u>An Impostor?<\/u><\/b><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/h4>\n<p style=\"margin: 0in 0in 10pt;\"><span style=\"font-size: 11pt;\"><span style=\"line-height: 115%;\"><span style=\"font-family: Calibri,sans-serif;\">\u00a0Am I an impostor?<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0in 0in 10pt;\"><span style=\"font-size: 11pt;\"><span style=\"line-height: 115%;\"><span style=\"font-family: Calibri,sans-serif;\">No, I am not an impostor but an observer. Looking, making mental notes, and trying to keep steady.<br \/>\nI pinch myself and ask is this real?<br \/>\nI know it\u2019s been a journey and a half; however, there is excitement all around me.<br \/>\nI am caught up in the mighty flow of energy, euphoria, and expectation.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0in 0in 10pt;\"><span style=\"font-size: 11pt;\"><span style=\"line-height: 115%;\"><span style=\"font-family: Calibri,sans-serif;\">Am I an impostor?<br \/>\nNo, I am not, and yet I have been caught up and swept into the river\u00a0of hope.<br \/>\nI look around, there is some diversity. Curious learners ready to make a start.<br \/>\nOverwhelmed by a sea of people keen to leave their mark.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0in 0in 10pt;\"><span style=\"font-size: 11pt;\"><span style=\"line-height: 115%;\"><span style=\"font-family: Calibri,sans-serif;\">Am I an impostor?<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0in 0in 10pt;\"><span style=\"font-size: 11pt;\"><span style=\"line-height: 115%;\"><span style=\"font-family: Calibri,sans-serif;\">No, I am not an impostor.\u00a0I am simply carrying the flag of hope. The flag of privilege and feeling totally blessed. \u201cl belong here,\u201d I say to myself.<br \/>\nNo doubt about it, I have earned my place here.<br \/>\nI take in a deep breath.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0in 0in 10pt;\"><span style=\"font-size: 11pt;\"><span style=\"line-height: 115%;\"><span style=\"font-family: Calibri,sans-serif;\">An impostor?<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0in 0in 10pt;\"><span style=\"font-size: 11pt;\"><span style=\"line-height: 115%;\"><span style=\"font-family: Calibri,sans-serif;\">No, I belong here with my shiny, mahogany, sun-kissed skin. Feeling elated and proud.<br \/>\nI have taken my position on this stage.<br \/>\nA journey into the unknown with my fellow travellers side by side.<br \/>\nAccepted, respected, and valued.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0in 0in 10pt;\"><span style=\"font-size: 11pt;\"><span style=\"line-height: 115%;\"><span style=\"font-family: Calibri,sans-serif;\">\u00a0An impostor?<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0in 0in 10pt;\"><span style=\"font-size: 11pt;\"><span style=\"line-height: 115%;\"><span style=\"font-family: Calibri,sans-serif;\">No! With both hands I receive my destiny.<br \/>\nAn opportunity to stand still for a moment, take stock, and fly.<br \/>\nAn opportunity to sow a seed and grow in this fertile soil.<br \/>\nAn opportunity to embrace all that comes.<br \/>\nAn opportunity\u00a0to be who I want to be.<br \/>\nAn opportunity to make my life count.<br \/>\nAn opportunity to shine.<br \/>\nNo impostors here.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><i>At the time of the original publication, Gazey Umweni was a first year student on the MEd Counselling course, Faculty of Education, University of Cambridge.
