Three researchers William Kaelin, Sir Peter Ratcliffe and Gregg Semenza were declared the winners of the medicine prize for discovering how cells in the body sense and adapt to the availability of oxygen. <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin:0in 0in 10pt\"><span style=\"font-size:11pt\"><span style=\"line-height:115%\"><span style=\"font-family:Calibri,sans-serif\">3. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.editage.com\/insights\/elsevier-probes-its-peer-reviewers-for-potential-citation-manipulation\/\" style=\"color:blue; text-decoration:underline\">Elsevier probes its peer reviewers for potential citation manipulation<\/a><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin:0in 0in 10pt\"><span style=\"font-size:11pt\"><span style=\"line-height:115%\"><span style=\"font-family:Calibri,sans-serif\">Nearly 55,000 academics review for Elsevier\u2019s various journals, and out of them the publisher found that close to 500 have consistently had their studies cited in papers they have reviewed. <a href=\"https:\/\/papers.ssrn.com\/sol3\/papers.cfm?abstract_id=3339568\" style=\"color:blue; text-decoration:underline\">A study<\/a> on citation patterns by Elsevier&#8217;s analytics\u00a0revealed that 1% of the reviewers were consistently referenced in the papers they reviewed. Therefore, the publisher launched an investigation for any evidence of coercive citation and indicated that those found guilty of this unethical practice will be delisted from their board. <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin:0in 0in 10pt\"><span style=\"font-size:11pt\"><span style=\"line-height:115%\"><span style=\"font-family:Calibri,sans-serif\">4. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.editage.com\/insights\/project-deal-and-springer-nature-strike-the-worlds-largest-open-access-deal\/\" style=\"color:blue; text-decoration:underline\">Project DEAL and Springer Nature strike the world&#8217;s largest open access deal<\/a><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin:0in 0in 10pt\"><span style=\"font-size:11pt\"><span style=\"line-height:115%\"><span style=\"font-family:Calibri,sans-serif\">The rising cost of accessing paywalled literature has led several academic institutions to strike deals with publishers. Project DEAL, a consortium of about 700 universities, research institutes, and libraries in Germany, was set up to engineer nationwide publish-and-read deals with scholarly publishing journals.\u00a0After prolonged negotiations, it signed a read-and-publish agreement with Springer Nature. The deal will allow German researchers to publish open access in Springer\u2019s hybrid as well as fully open access journals. Since it is expected to cover about 13,500 articles per year, it has been called \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.booksandpublishing.com.au\/articles\/2019\/08\/23\/138151\/springer-nature-and-projekt-deal-strike-worlds-largest-transformative-open-access-agreement\/\" style=\"color:blue; text-decoration:underline\">the world\u2019s largest transformative open access agreement<\/a>.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin:0in 0in 10pt\"><span style=\"font-size:11pt\"><span style=\"line-height:115%\"><span style=\"font-family:Calibri,sans-serif\">5.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\" style=\"font-size:11.0pt\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\"><span style=\"line-height:115%\"><span style=\"font-family:&quot;Calibri&quot;,&quot;sans-serif&quot;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.editage.com\/insights\/clarivate-analytics-releases-2019-journal-citation-reports\/\">Clarivate Analytics releases 2019 Journal Citation Reports<\/a>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin:0in 0in 10pt\">In June, Clarivate Analytics released its annual <a href=\"https:\/\/clarivate.com\/blog\/science-research-connect\/announcing-the-2019-journal-citation-reports\/\">Journal Citation Reports<\/a>\u00a0that measure the impact of journals using a combination of metrics.\u00a0The 2019\u00a0report covered 11,877 journals from over 80 countries. Notably, several of the new titles added to the list this year were open access. According to the clause, researchers conducting studies related to human genes or embryos\u00a0would need to follow relevant rules and conduct research ethically. Many researchers expressed that this is the first time that definitive steps have been taken to regulate genome studies in China. <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin:0in 0in 10pt\"><span style=\"font-size:11pt\"><span style=\"line-height:115%\"><span style=\"font-family:Calibri,sans-serif\">7. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.editage.com\/insights\/publishing-group-omics-international-hit-with-50-million-fine-for-dubious-publishing-practices\/\" style=\"color:blue; text-decoration:underline\">Publishing group OMICS International hit with $50 million fine for dubious publishing practices<\/a><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin:0in 0in 10pt\"><span style=\"font-size:11pt\"><span style=\"line-height:115%\"><span style=\"font-family:Calibri,sans-serif\">On March 29, a U.S. District Court ordered India-based publishing group OMICS International to pay a fine of over $50 million for using deceptive practices. The U.S. consumer protection agency Federal Trade Commission (FTC) had accused the publisher of failing to maintain transparency regarding their publication fees, peer review process, and details about the editorial board. As per FTC, the publisher had also provided fake data regarding the journal\u2019s impact factor. The publisher failed to participate in the court proceedings, and so the court ruled in favor of FTC as the publisher had been accused of similar unethical publishing practices in the past as well. \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin:0in 0in 10pt\"><span style=\"font-size:11pt\"><span style=\"line-height:115%\"><span style=\"font-family:Calibri,sans-serif\">8. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.editage.com\/insights\/duke-university-to-pay-112-5-million-to-settle-research-misconduct-lawsuit\/\" style=\"color:blue; text-decoration:underline\">Duke University to pay $112.5 million to settle research misconduct lawsuit<\/a><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin:0in 0in 10pt\"><span style=\"font-size:11pt\"><span style=\"line-height:115%\"><span style=\"font-family:Calibri,sans-serif\">Duke University was accused of submitting falsified data to acquire grants worth $200 million from federal agencies like the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and the Environment Protection Agency (EPA). A former employee and whistleblower Joseph Thomas filed the lawsuit in 2016 against the university under the False Claims Act and the court ruled that he will receive $33,750,000 as settlement amount.
