If you have, I\u2019m sure you have seen some of the great conversations researchers are having on that platform. Academics are no longer sitting in tall, inaccessible ivory towers, talking mostly and infrequently only to each other. Thanks to platforms like Twitter, there is now a constant exchange among academics across disciplines, cultures, languages, etc. They\u00a0seem to have embraced Twitter to &#8220;<span class=\"MsoHyperlink\" style=\"color:blue\"><span style=\"text-decoration:underline\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.labsexplorer.com\/c\/twitter-and-scientists-a-love-story_185\" style=\"color:blue; text-decoration:underline\">follow discussions on research-related issues, comment on research that is relevant to their field, share links to authored content and post work content<\/a><\/span><\/span>\u201d as well as to share their views on topics that are close to their heart and connect with others in the virtual space. In fact, today, almost anyone can initiate a discussion on anything! <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"CxSpMiddle\"><span style=\"line-height:115%\"><span style=\"font-size:12.0pt\"><span style=\"line-height:115%\"><span style=\"font-family:&quot;Times New Roman&quot;,serif\">So what kind of discussions were academics having on Twitter in 2019? To know more, I dug deeper and found several interesting and thought-provoking discussions that ranged from humorous and quirky to serious and personal. I decided to put together a round-up of some of these conversations by picking one for each month of the year gone by. I hope you enjoy catching up with these. <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><b><u>January<\/u><\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"line-height:115%\"><span style=\"font-size:12.0pt\"><span style=\"line-height:115%\"><span style=\"font-family:&quot;Times New Roman&quot;,serif\">2019 started on a high note with many great discussions. Among those, I noticed a Twitter thread that covers one of the first and most important steps of the PhD journey\u2014 choosing the right advisor. <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"CxSpMiddle\"><span style=\"line-height:115%\"><span style=\"font-size:12.0pt\"><span style=\"line-height:115%\"><span style=\"font-family:&quot;Times New Roman&quot;,serif\">PhD candidate<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/JJRodV\"> <span class=\"MsoHyperlink\" style=\"color:blue\"><span style=\"text-decoration:underline\">Jorge J Rodr\u00edguez V (@JJRodV)<\/span><\/span><\/a> shared <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/JJRodV\/status\/1088295825464283136\">his views <\/a>on what constitutes a good advisor and how kindness is an essential quality in a potential academic advisor. <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\" xml:lang=\"en\">The advice I continue giving folks looking into PhD programs is to look for an advisor who is kind.<\/p>\n<p>Don\u2019t look for the \u201cmost brilliant\u201d advisor. But what are the available alternative career options and do academics even think about that when they are pursuing their PhD? In February, <span class=\"MsoHyperlink\" style=\"color:blue\"><span style=\"text-decoration:underline\"><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/SanniaF\" style=\"color:blue; text-decoration:underline\">Sannia Farooque (@SanniaF)<\/a><\/span><\/span> tweeted her thoughts on how PhD students need to focus on the larger picture, think about their overall development, and remember that &#8220;there has to be more to a PhD than a desire or need to publish.&#8221;<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\" xml:lang=\"en\">Most PhD students don&#8217;t end up in academia for whatever reason. This can lead to depression. On the other hand, low self-worth and stressful elements of their work can lead academics to feel as if they do not deserve to be where they are, and have made it because nobody has figured out that they are frauds. This imposter syndrome is a constant presence in many academics\u2019 lives. But that does not mean that everyone who is pursuing research is publishing, keeping up with their work, and doing well consistently. Many researchers struggle in silence\u00a0and succumb to depression.
