The outbreak has been declared a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.who.int\/news-room\/detail\/30-01-2020-statement-on-the-second-meeting-of-the-international-health-regulations-(2005)-emergency-committee-regarding-the-outbreak-of-novel-coronavirus-(2019-ncov)\" style=\"color:blue; text-decoration:underline\">global health emergency<\/a> by the World Health Organization (WHO), and researchers around the globe are working to understand the virus and develop treatment methods. <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:justify; margin:0in 0in 10pt\"><span style=\"font-size:11pt\"><span style=\"line-height:115%\"><span style=\"font-family:Calibri,sans-serif\">On January 31, 2020, the U.K. based non-profit research charity Wellcome Trust <a href=\"https:\/\/wellcome.ac.uk\/press-release\/sharing-research-data-and-findings-relevant-novel-coronavirus-ncov-outbreak\" style=\"color:blue; text-decoration:underline\">appealed<\/a> researchers and funders to share research data and findings pertaining to the coronavirus outbreak promptly and openly \u201cto inform the public health response and help save lives.\u201d \u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:justify; margin:0in 0in 10pt\"><span style=\"font-size:11pt\"><span style=\"line-height:115%\"><span style=\"font-family:Calibri,sans-serif\">In response, 85 publishers, scientific societies, and funders have signed a joint statement committing to make public the latest findings and data on coronavirus immediately. Some of the important specifications of the statement are mentioned below:<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify; margin: 0in 0in 10pt;\"><span style=\"font-size:11pt\"><span style=\"line-height:115%\"><span style=\"font-family:Calibri,sans-serif\">For the duration of the outbreak, all peer-reviewed publications regarding the outbreak will be made available freely.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify; margin: 0in 0in 10pt;\"><span style=\"font-size:11pt\"><span style=\"line-height:115%\"><span style=\"font-family:Calibri,sans-serif\">Research findings will be made available on preprint servers or via other platforms where papers can be shared before peer review alongside information regarding underlying data.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify; margin: 0in 0in 10pt;\"><span style=\"font-size:11pt\"><span style=\"line-height:115%\"><span style=\"font-family:Calibri,sans-serif\">All research findings will be shared with the WHO immediately.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify; margin: 0in 0in 10pt;\"><span style=\"font-size:11pt\"><span style=\"line-height:115%\"><span style=\"font-family:Calibri,sans-serif\">Authors will share interim and final research data widely and rapidly along with protocols and standards used to gather data with the WHO and public health and research communities.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify; margin: 0in 0in 10pt;\"><span style=\"font-size:11pt\"><span style=\"line-height:115%\"><span style=\"font-family:Calibri,sans-serif\">Several publishers and journals such as Elsevier, SpringerNature, <em>eLife<\/em>, <em>The Lancet<\/em>, and The Royal <\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-size:11pt\"><span style=\"line-height:115%\"><span style=\"font-family:Calibri,sans-serif\">Society have pledged their support to making data and findings relevant to the outbreak public with immediacy. The scientific community has responded to this move positively. Alessandro Vespignani, who leads the\u00a0Modeling of Biological and Socio-Technical Systems Lab in the U.S., <a href=\"https:\/\/qz.com\/1795103\/coronavirus-is-a-proving-ground-for-scientific-transparency\/\" style=\"color:blue; text-decoration:underline\">said<\/a>: \u201cIn previous outbreaks you could wait weeks or months to see a paper come out that had that one piece of information you needed in your work. [\u2026] This time is different.\u201d <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:justify; margin:0in 0in 10pt\"><span style=\"font-size:11pt\"><span style=\"line-height:115%\"><span style=\"font-family:Calibri,sans-serif\">Announcing its support to the Wellcome Trust\u2019s initiative, <em>Nature<\/em> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/d41586-020-00307-x\" style=\"color:blue; text-decoration:underline\">stated<\/a> that: \u201cFor researchers, the message is simple: work hard to understand and combat this infectious disease; make that work of the highest standard; and make results quickly available to the world.\u201d <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:justify; margin:0in 0in 10pt\"><span style=\"font-size:11pt\"><span style=\"line-height:115%\"><span style=\"font-family:Calibri,sans-serif\">On the flip side, there is concern over the problems that the data availability can create, particularly in the case of preprints that have not been peer reviewed. Science journalist Adam Rogers <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/coronavirus-research-preprint-servers\/\" style=\"color:blue; text-decoration:underline\">says<\/a>, \u201cScientists aren\u2019t the only ones who can download a preprint.
