{"id":3731,"date":"2021-01-29T12:31:14","date_gmt":"2021-01-29T12:31:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.editage.com\/insights\/royal-society-of-chemistry-retracts-68-papers-for-being-paper-mill-products\/"},"modified":"2025-11-25T15:23:23","modified_gmt":"2025-11-25T09:53:23","slug":"royal-society-of-chemistry-retracts-68-papers-for-being-paper-mill-products","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.editage.com\/insights\/royal-society-of-chemistry-retracts-68-papers-for-being-paper-mill-products","title":{"rendered":"Royal Society of Chemistry retracts 68 papers for being &#8220;paper mill&#8221; products"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: justify; margin: 0in 0in 8pt;\"><span style=\"font-size: 11pt;\"><span style=\"line-height: 107%;\"><span style=\"font-family: Calibri,sans-serif;\">Last week, the Royal Society of Chemistry (RSC) <a style=\"color: #0563c1; text-decoration: underline;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.rsc.org\/news-events\/articles\/2021\/jan\/paper-mill-response\" rel=\"nofollow\">announced<\/a> the retraction of 68 articles from three of its titles \u2013 <i>RSC Advances<\/i>, <i>RSC Medicinal Chemistry<\/i>, and <i>Food and Function<\/i> \u2013 on grounds of falsified research. <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify; margin: 0in 0in 8pt;\"><span style=\"font-size: 11pt;\"><span style=\"line-height: 107%;\"><span style=\"font-family: Calibri,sans-serif;\">An investigation was conducted throughout 2020 by RSC in association with experts, which turned up several papers that were suspected of fraudulent activity. These papers, which appeared legitimate on the surface, were written in \u201cvery similar structures or templates\u201d despite the authors being different. A number of instances of image manipulation and duplication were also observed. According to <a style=\"color: #0563c1; text-decoration: underline;\" href=\"https:\/\/cen.acs.org\/policy\/publishing\/Paper-mill-hits-RSC-journals\/99\/web\/2021\/01\" rel=\"nofollow\">Chemical &amp; Engineering News<\/a>, RSC became aware of this problem in 2019, which led them to carry out the investigation.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify; margin: 0in 0in 8pt;\"><span style=\"font-size: 11pt;\"><span style=\"line-height: 107%;\"><span style=\"font-family: Calibri,sans-serif;\">Referring to the incident, RSC said it is a result of \u201can organised and sophisticated operation, summed up as what is known as a \u201cpaper mill\u201d.\u201d Paper mills are suspected of creating research papers based on fabricated data and may include contrived images too. Usually, journal editors find it challenging to discern such papers from legitimated ones. <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify; margin: 0in 0in 8pt;\"><span style=\"font-size: 11pt;\"><span style=\"line-height: 107%;\"><span style=\"font-family: Calibri,sans-serif;\">To identify potentially fraudulent submissions, RSC has introduced several measures. The screening process has been\u00a0enhanced and software will be used to detect\u00a0any instances of image manipulation. Further, RSC indicated that their\u00a0editors would receive training to identify any submissions with red flags to eliminate similar problems in the future. <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify; margin: 0in 0in 8pt;\"><span style=\"font-size: 11pt;\"><span style=\"line-height: 107%;\"><span style=\"font-family: Calibri,sans-serif;\">The learned society has assured the community that\u00a0necessary steps are being taken to safeguard their editorial and peer review processes against scientific fraud.
