Despite the progress made over the years, members of the LGBTQ+ community tend to be\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/journals.sagepub.com\/doi\/abs\/10.1177\/2372732220943232\">underrepresented and experience non-supportive work environments<\/a>. A\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.tandfonline.com\/doi\/abs\/10.1080\/00918369.2015.1078632?journalCode=wjhm20\">study<\/a>\u00a0showed that only 57% of LGBTQ+ individuals in STEM were out to their colleagues and many considered leaving their fields due to the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.rsc.org\/globalassets\/04-campaigning-outreach\/campaigning\/lgbt-report\/lgbt-report_web.pdf\">climate of discrimination<\/a>. The scientific community has undertaken several initiatives to improve the visibility and inclusion of LGBTQ+ individuals and make research culture more diverse and equitable.<\/p>\n<p>Following a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.rsc.org\/globalassets\/04-campaigning-outreach\/campaigning\/lgbt-report\/lgbt-report_web.pdf\">report<\/a>\u00a0highlighting the disparities faced by LGBTQ+ scientists in the workplace, the Royal Society for Chemistry has made\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.rsc.org\/new-perspectives\/talent\/inclusion-and-diversity\/resources\/lgbt-toolkit\/\">resources<\/a>\u00a0available for members to actively participate in creating positive changes and making science more inclusive.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.photonicssociety.org\/who-we-are\/commitment-to-diversity\/pride-in-photonics#:~:text=Pride%20in%20Photonics%20seeks%20to,acceptance%20of%20inclusion%20best%2Dpractices.\">Pride in Photonics<\/a>\u00a0is an initiative by the IEEE Photonics Society and The Optical Society, showcasing the contributions of LGBTQ+ researchers. The IEEE Photonics Society is also a sponsor of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/prismaciencia.org\/\">PRISMA<\/a>, an organization advocating for gender and sexual diversity in science; PRISMA also hosts a one of its kind bilingual conference every year for LGBTQ+ members in STEM. The Institute of Physics, the Royal Astronomical Society, and the Royal Society of Chemistry power the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.iop.org\/about\/iop-diversity-inclusion\/LGBT-physical-sciences-network#gref\">LGBT+ Physical Scientists Network<\/a>\u00a0to promote diversity and inclusion within their organizations, while\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/group.springernature.com\/gp\/group\/taking-responsibility\/employee-networks#c17495474\">Springer Nature<\/a>\u2019s\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/media.springernature.com\/full\/springer-cms\/rest\/v1\/content\/18157588\/data\/v4\">SN Pride<\/a>\u00a0aims to create a safe and respectful workplace for its LGBTQ+ employees. Another remarkable initiative is\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/noglstp.org\/programs-projects\/mentoring-program\/\">Out to Innovate<\/a>\u2019s venture with the National Research Mentoring Network and MentorNet to connect mentors and mentees within the LGBTQ+ community across STEM disciplines. Other research societies like the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ama-assn.org\/member-groups-sections\/advisory-committee-lgbtq-issues\">American Medical Association<\/a>, the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.apadivisions.org\/division-44\/about\">American Psychological Association<\/a>, the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/aas.org\/comms\/sgma\">American Astronomical Society<\/a>, and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ascb.org\/society-news\/diversity-pride-introducing-a-new-ascb-committee\/\">The American Society for Cell Biology<\/a>\u00a0have committees focusing on issues regarding LGBTQ+ equality and visibility.<\/p>\n<p>Embracing gender and sexual diversity helps foster a more diverse research culture, which is key in driving scientific innovation and a thriving workforce.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Pride Month (June) is an opportunity to highlight the efforts and contributions of LGBTQ+ researchers.
