{"id":3888,"date":"2022-04-21T13:33:13","date_gmt":"2022-04-21T13:33:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.editage.com\/insights\/did-climate-change-direct-early-human-migration\/"},"modified":"2025-01-15T06:25:56","modified_gmt":"2025-01-15T06:25:56","slug":"did-climate-change-direct-early-human-migration","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.editage.com\/insights\/did-climate-change-direct-early-human-migration","title":{"rendered":"Did climate change direct early human migration?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align:justify; margin:0cm 0cm 8pt\"><span style=\"font-size:11pt\"><span style=\"line-height:107%\"><span style=\"font-family:Calibri,sans-serif\">According to a new study<sup>1<\/sup>, climate change over two million years, affected by Earth\u2019s movement and other planetary conditions, could have played a crucial role in carving out the route early humans took to migrate.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:justify; margin:0cm 0cm 8pt\"><span style=\"font-size:11pt\"><span style=\"line-height:107%\"><span style=\"font-family:Calibri,sans-serif\">In this study, a group of scientists led by Alex Timmermann, a climate physicist, Pusan National University in South Korea, used a model simulation covering the temperature and rainfall data of the last two million years. This model was run on a supercomputer for six months to record how the climate conditions affected Earth\u2019s resources, mainly food, and triggered human migration.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:justify; margin:0cm 0cm 8pt\"><span style=\"font-size:11pt\"><span style=\"line-height:107%\"><span style=\"font-family:Calibri,sans-serif\">They tracked and analyzed the movement of six human species: <i>Homo neanderthalensis, Homo erectus, Homo heidelbergensis, Homo<\/i>\u00a0<i>habilis<\/i>,<i> Homo ergaster<\/i>, and\u00a0<i>Homo sapiens. <\/i>Some of these, like <i>Homo erectus<\/i> and <i>Homo sapiens<\/i>, migrated extensively, whereas others like <i>Homo neanderthalensis <\/i>did not move much and stayed within Europe. <i>Homo heidelbergensis <\/i>covered the widest range within Europe and eastern Asia. The study indicated that all the species responded to extreme weather conditions and chose to migrate. \u201cArchaic humans either had to adapt to the new environment or migrate to different regions,\u201d said Timmermann.<sup> 2<\/sup><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:justify; margin:0cm 0cm 8pt\"><span style=\"font-size:11pt\"><span style=\"line-height:107%\"><span style=\"font-family:Calibri,sans-serif\">As another example of migration due to climate change, Timmermann explains that with the beginning of the ice age in northern Europe, <i>Homo heidelbergensis<\/i>\u00a0and <i>Homo neanderthalensis <\/i>moved southward, that is, toward the Mediterranean region, as it had abundant resources. As the weather conditions improved in the north and life began thriving again in the region, these species migrated back. <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:justify; margin:0cm 0cm 8pt\"><span style=\"font-size:11pt\"><span style=\"line-height:107%\"><span style=\"font-family:Calibri,sans-serif\">Timmermann\u2019s team used fossils and archaeological artefacts, combined them with the simulation\u2019s results, and created a pattern our ancestors might have followed during their migration. And the results provide evidence that climate change drove the migration patterns.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:justify; margin:0cm 0cm 8pt\"><span style=\"font-size:11pt\"><span style=\"line-height:107%\"><span style=\"font-family:Calibri,sans-serif\">The study also suggested that adaptations to the harsh conditions may have led one species to evolve into another over the years. <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:justify; margin:0cm 0cm 8pt\"><span style=\"font-size:11pt\"><span style=\"line-height:107%\"><span style=\"font-family:Calibri,sans-serif\">For instance, the birth of <i>Homo sapiens<\/i> is debated by scientists. Some researchers propose the theory that it is an \u201coutcome of a single evolutionary event in southern Africa.\u201d<sup>3<\/sup> Others believe that several groups of species in Africa mingled together, resulting in the emergence of <i>Homo sapiens<\/i>. Timmermann\u2019s model supports the former theory and suggests that during a scorching period when <i>Homo heidelbergensis<\/i>\u00a0struggled to survive the climatic conditions, it started adapting to the warmer and drier conditions and gradually evolved into <i>Homo sapiens<\/i>.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:justify; margin:0cm 0cm 8pt\"><span style=\"font-size:11pt\"><span style=\"line-height:107%\"><span style=\"font-family:Calibri,sans-serif\">However, many researchers think that the evidence is not enough to support this theory.
