Depending on where you live, celebrating Pride can either be a radical assertion of one\u2019s rights and existence, or a friendly time to celebrate the queer people in our communities.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<h1 style=\"margin:12pt 0in 0.0001pt\"><span style=\"font-size:16pt\"><span style=\"line-height:107%\"><span style=\"font-family:&quot;Calibri Light&quot;,sans-serif\"><span style=\"color:#2f5496\"><span style=\"font-weight:normal\">Why it matters to the academic community<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/h1>\n<p style=\"margin:0in 0in 8pt\"><span style=\"font-size:11pt\"><span style=\"line-height:107%\"><span style=\"font-family:Calibri,sans-serif\"><span class=\"MsoHyperlink\" style=\"color:#0563c1\"><span style=\"text-decoration:underline\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.britannica.com\/biography\/Alan-Turing\" style=\"color:#0563c1; text-decoration:underline\">Alan Turing<\/a><\/span><\/span> is undoubtedly a pivotal figure in computer science and in world history overall. His decoding of the Enigma cypher proved vital to the Allied war effort and eventual victory in the Second World War. Turing rightfully should have been lauded as a hero by the British and American governments, but he was <span class=\"MsoHyperlink\" style=\"color:#0563c1\"><span style=\"text-decoration:underline\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/uk-england-manchester-37443639\" style=\"color:#0563c1; text-decoration:underline\">convicted of \u201cgross indecency\u201d in 1952<\/a><\/span><\/span> because of relations he had had privately with another man. He was subjected to an unethical experimental punishment with hormone treatments, and this was likely a key contributing factor to his untimely death in 1954 due to a suspected suicide.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin:0in 0in 8pt\"><span style=\"font-size:11pt\"><span style=\"line-height:107%\"><span style=\"font-family:Calibri,sans-serif\">Turing\u2019s tragedy is a warning. It\u2019s <span class=\"MsoHyperlink\" style=\"color:#0563c1\"><span style=\"text-decoration:underline\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.science.org\/doi\/10.1126\/sciadv.aao6373\" style=\"color:#0563c1; text-decoration:underline\">vital to foster a welcoming environment for LGBTQ+ individuals<\/a><\/span><\/span> in <span class=\"MsoHyperlink\" style=\"color:#0563c1\"><span style=\"text-decoration:underline\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.stevens.edu\/news\/lab-out-loud-universities-are-key-lgbtq-visibility-stem\" style=\"color:#0563c1; text-decoration:underline\">research and academia<\/a><\/span><\/span>. Failing to recognize contributions by queer people and tolerating bigoted working environments can cost us valued colleagues and their contributions.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<h1 style=\"margin:12pt 0in 0.0001pt\"><span style=\"font-size:16pt\"><span style=\"line-height:107%\"><span style=\"font-family:&quot;Calibri Light&quot;,sans-serif\"><span style=\"color:#2f5496\"><span style=\"font-weight:normal\">Events and activities taking place in 2022<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/h1>\n<p style=\"margin:0in 0in 8pt\"><span style=\"font-size:11pt\"><span style=\"line-height:107%\"><span style=\"font-family:Calibri,sans-serif\">Pride month may be drawing to a close, but that does not mean that the academic community plans to put conversations on hold until next June. There are still many events to come this year. Here, I summarize just some of the dozens of upcoming LGBTQ+-related academic events across a variety of countries and disciplines.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<h2 style=\"margin:2pt 0in 0.0001pt\"><span style=\"font-size:13pt\"><span style=\"line-height:107%\"><span style=\"font-family:&quot;Calibri Light&quot;,sans-serif\"><span style=\"color:#2f5496\"><span style=\"font-weight:normal\">USA\u2014National LGBTQ Health Conference<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/h2>\n<p style=\"margin:0in 0in 8pt\"><span style=\"font-size:11pt\"><span style=\"line-height:107%\"><span style=\"font-family:Calibri,sans-serif\"><span class=\"MsoHyperlink\" style=\"color:#0563c1\"><span style=\"text-decoration:underline\"><a href=\"https:\/\/isgmh.northwestern.edu\/\" style=\"color:#0563c1; text-decoration:underline\">The Institute for Sexual and Gender Minority Health and Wellbeing<\/a><\/span><\/span> of Northwestern University plans to hold its <span class=\"MsoHyperlink\" style=\"color:#0563c1\"><span style=\"text-decoration:underline\"><a href=\"https:\/\/isgmh.northwestern.edu\/events\/national-lgbtq-health-conference\/\" style=\"color:#0563c1; text-decoration:underline\">National LGBTQ Health Conference<\/a><\/span><\/span> from July 28 to 30 in Chicago, IL. This major conference has been taking place since 2012, and more recently, Emory University has joined as a partner.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin:0in 0in 8pt\"><span style=\"font-size:11pt\"><span style=\"line-height:107%\"><span style=\"font-family:Calibri,sans-serif\">It is billed as \u201can interdisciplinary translational research conference bringing together scientists, public health professionals, and healthcare providers to discuss issues affecting the health and wellbeing of the LGBTQ community.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin:0in 0in 8pt\"><span style=\"font-size:11pt\"><span style=\"line-height:107%\"><span style=\"font-family:Calibri,sans-serif\">The conference has <span class=\"MsoHyperlink\" style=\"color:#0563c1\"><span style=\"text-decoration:underline\"><a href=\"https:\/\/lgbtqhealthconf.dryfta.com\/85-program-schedule\" style=\"color:#0563c1; text-decoration:underline\">a packed schedule<\/a><\/span><\/span> with many sessions on virtually all topics in LGBT health, so there is bound to be many sessions of interest, regardless of your research discipline. The opening remarks and keynote speech are presented by the US Assistant Secretary for Health <span class=\"MsoHyperlink\" style=\"color:#0563c1\"><span style=\"text-decoration:underline\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hhs.gov\/about\/leadership\/rachel-levine.html\" style=\"color:#0563c1; text-decoration:underline\">Dr. Rachel Levine<\/a><\/span><\/span> and <span class=\"MsoHyperlink\" style=\"color:#0563c1\"><span style=\"text-decoration:underline\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.researchgate.net\/profile\/Lisa-Diamond\" style=\"color:#0563c1; text-decoration:underline\">Prof. Lisa Diamond<\/a><\/span><\/span>.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<h2 style=\"margin:2pt 0in 0.0001pt\"><span style=\"font-size:13pt\"><span style=\"line-height:107%\"><span style=\"font-family:&quot;Calibri Light&quot;,sans-serif\"><span style=\"color:#2f5496\"><span style=\"font-weight:normal\">UAE\u2014Global Congress on Gender and Sexuality Studies<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/h2>\n<p style=\"margin:0in 0in 8pt\"><span style=\"font-size:11pt\"><span style=\"line-height:107%\"><span style=\"font-family:Calibri,sans-serif\"><span class=\"MsoHyperlink\" style=\"color:#0563c1\"><span style=\"text-decoration:underline\"><a href=\"https:\/\/genderstudycongress.com\/index.php\" style=\"color:#0563c1; text-decoration:underline\">The 3rd Edition of the Global Congress on Gender and Sexuality Studies<\/a><\/span><\/span> is due to be held from October 24 to 25 in Dubai. This hybrid conference can be attended either virtually or in-person, and the tentative program is shaping up with a <span class=\"MsoHyperlink\" style=\"color:#0563c1\"><span style=\"text-decoration:underline\"><a href=\"https:\/\/genderstudycongress.com\/speakers.php?id=3\" style=\"color:#0563c1; text-decoration:underline\">diverse range of topics and speakers<\/a><\/span><\/span> with expertise including neuroscience, indigenous studies, pedagogy, and much more.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin:0in 0in 8pt\"><span style=\"font-size:11pt\"><span style=\"line-height:107%\"><span style=\"font-family:Calibri,sans-serif\">This conference is organized by the <span class=\"MsoHyperlink\" style=\"color:#0563c1\"><span style=\"text-decoration:underline\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciinovgroup.com\/\" style=\"color:#0563c1; text-decoration:underline\">Sciinov Group<\/a><\/span><\/span>, and the conference aims to \u201cbring together current research on gender and sexuality\u201d under the theme of \u201cConstructs and Narratives of Gender and Sexuality in Society.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin:0in 0in 8pt\"><span style=\"font-size:11pt\"><span style=\"line-height:107%\"><span style=\"font-family:Calibri,sans-serif\">The conference will close its abstract submissions <span class=\"MsoHyperlink\" style=\"color:#0563c1\"><span style=\"text-decoration:underline\"><a href=\"https:\/\/genderstudycongress.com\/abstract-submission.php\" style=\"color:#0563c1; text-decoration:underline\">on June 28th<\/a><\/span><\/span>, so act fast if you\u2019re interested in this meeting as a venue for your research.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<h2 style=\"margin:2pt 0in 0.0001pt\"><span style=\"font-size:13pt\"><span style=\"line-height:107%\"><span style=\"font-family:&quot;Calibri Light&quot;,sans-serif\"><span style=\"color:#2f5496\"><span style=\"font-weight:normal\">UK\u2014International Conference on Gender Studies<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/h2>\n<p style=\"margin:0in 0in 8pt\"><span style=\"font-size:11pt\"><span style=\"line-height:107%\"><span style=\"font-family:Calibri,sans-serif\">One edition of <span class=\"MsoHyperlink\" style=\"color:#0563c1\"><span style=\"text-decoration:underline\"><a href=\"https:\/\/genderstudies.lcir.co.uk\/gender-nonconformity-conference\/\" style=\"color:#0563c1; text-decoration:underline\">The International Conference on Gender Studies<\/a><\/span><\/span>, organized by the <span class=\"MsoHyperlink\" style=\"color:#0563c1\"><span style=\"text-decoration:underline\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.lcir.co.uk\/\" style=\"color:#0563c1; text-decoration:underline\">London Centre for Interdisciplinary Research<\/a><\/span><\/span>, is due to be held this year in London from September 3 to 4. The conference aims to \u201cexplore the past and current status of gender identity around the world, to examine the ways in which society is shaped by gender and to situate gender in relation to the full scope of human affairs.\u201d Of note, the September conference theme is \u201cQue(e)rying Gender,\u201d which provides many opportunities for interdisciplinary discussions on a range of queer topics.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin:0in 0in 8pt\"><span style=\"font-size:11pt\"><span style=\"line-height:107%\"><span style=\"font-family:Calibri,sans-serif\">Like most other conferences in this article, this event runs both online and in-person. As this conference runs multiple events throughout the year, <span class=\"MsoHyperlink\" style=\"color:#0563c1\"><span style=\"text-decoration:underline\"><a href=\"https:\/\/genderstudies.lcir.co.uk\/gender-events-review\/\" style=\"color:#0563c1; text-decoration:underline\">check back<\/a><\/span><\/span> to find out about future events.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<h2 style=\"margin:2pt 0in 0.0001pt\"><span style=\"font-size:13pt\"><span style=\"line-height:107%\"><span style=\"font-family:&quot;Calibri Light&quot;,sans-serif\"><span style=\"color:#2f5496\"><span style=\"font-weight:normal\">Resources and future meetings for LGBTQ+ researchers in academia<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/h2>\n<p style=\"margin:0in 0in 8pt\"><span style=\"font-size:11pt\"><span style=\"line-height:107%\"><span style=\"font-family:Calibri,sans-serif\"><span class=\"MsoHyperlink\" style=\"color:#0563c1\"><span style=\"text-decoration:underline\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thestemvillage.com\/\" style=\"color:#0563c1; text-decoration:underline\">The STEM Village<\/a><\/span><\/span> is an organization created to \u201c[give] a platform to improve visibility of the LGBTQ+ STEM community around the world.\u201d <span class=\"MsoHyperlink\" style=\"color:#0563c1\"><span style=\"text-decoration:underline\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.crick.ac.uk\/news\/2020-11-18_why-we-recommend-taking-part-in-lgbtq-scientific-events\" style=\"color:#0563c1; text-decoration:underline\">Since 2020<\/a><\/span><\/span>, they have <span class=\"MsoHyperlink\" style=\"color:#0563c1\"><span style=\"text-decoration:underline\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thestemvillage.com\/events\" style=\"color:#0563c1; text-decoration:underline\">hosted online events<\/a><\/span><\/span> on immunology and engineering with an LGBTQ+ focus, some of which you can watch on their website. They also provide <span class=\"MsoHyperlink\" style=\"color:#0563c1\"><span style=\"text-decoration:underline\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thestemvillage.com\/resources\" style=\"color:#0563c1; text-decoration:underline\">resources <\/a><\/span><\/span>and <span class=\"MsoHyperlink\" style=\"color:#0563c1\"><span style=\"text-decoration:underline\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thestemvillage.com\/mentorship\" style=\"color:#0563c1; text-decoration:underline\">mentoring <\/a><\/span><\/span>to LGBTQ+ researchers. At the time of writing, they have no published plans for upcoming events. Perhaps you might want to lend a hand?<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin:0in 0in 8pt\"><span style=\"font-size:11pt\"><span style=\"line-height:107%\"><span style=\"font-family:Calibri,sans-serif\">Trinity College Dublin has its <span class=\"MsoHyperlink\" style=\"color:#0563c1\"><span style=\"text-decoration:underline\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.tcd.ie\/research\/researchmatters\/pride-in-research.php\" style=\"color:#0563c1; text-decoration:underline\">Pride in Research 2022<\/a><\/span><\/span> event. Unfortunately, this was already held on June 16, so if you didn\u2019t get to go, you will have to wait for next year. However, they are <span class=\"MsoHyperlink\" style=\"color:#0563c1\"><span style=\"text-decoration:underline\"><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/PRIDEinResearch\/status\/1538895117846777857\/\" style=\"color:#0563c1; text-decoration:underline\">looking for more members of the organizing team for 2023<\/a><\/span><\/span>, which looks like a great chance for collaboration on the topic of LGBTQ+ inclusion in research and academia.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin:0in 0in 8pt\"><span style=\"font-size:11pt\"><span style=\"line-height:107%\"><span style=\"font-family:Calibri,sans-serif\">Finally, the American Society for Microbiology has put together an excellent set of <span class=\"MsoHyperlink\" style=\"color:#0563c1\"><span style=\"text-decoration:underline\"><a href=\"https:\/\/asm.org\/Campaign-Pages\/ASM-Celebrates-Pride-Month\" style=\"color:#0563c1; text-decoration:underline\">resources, lectures, and personal stories regarding LGBTQ+ inclusion in research<\/a><\/span><\/span>. The ASM has also put together<span class=\"MsoHyperlink\" style=\"color:#0563c1\"><span style=\"text-decoration:underline\"><a href=\"https:\/\/asm.org\/ASM\/media\/AM-Governance\/BOD-Letter-Diversity-Equity-Inclusion-Taskforce-Report-Final.pdf?ext=.pdf\" style=\"color:#0563c1; text-decoration:underline\"> a full report on diversity and inclusion<\/a><\/span><\/span> in their field, which serves as another valuable resource to orient oneself on the importance of inclusion in science and academia.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<h1 style=\"margin:12pt 0in 0.0001pt\"><span style=\"font-size:16pt\"><span style=\"line-height:107%\"><span style=\"font-family:&quot;Calibri Light&quot;,sans-serif\"><span style=\"color:#2f5496\"><span style=\"font-weight:normal\">LGBTQ+ academic meetings and upcoming challenges<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/h1>\n<p><span lang=\"EN-GB\" style=\"font-size:11.0pt\" xml:lang=\"EN-GB\"><span style=\"line-height:107%\"><span style=\"font-family:&quot;Calibri&quot;,sans-serif\">Just as how <span class=\"MsoHyperlink\" style=\"color:#0563c1\"><span style=\"text-decoration:underline\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hrc.org\/resources\/hrc-issue-brief-hiv-aids-and-the-lgbt-community\" style=\"color:#0563c1; text-decoration:underline\">gay and transgender communities<\/a><\/span><\/span> have disproportionately been affected by HIV\/AIDS since the 1980s, there are still challenges to queer health and wellbeing worldwide. The latest is the <span class=\"MsoHyperlink\" style=\"color:#0563c1\"><span style=\"text-decoration:underline\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.who.int\/emergencies\/disease-outbreak-news\/item\/2022-DON385\" style=\"color:#0563c1; text-decoration:underline\">outbreak of monkeypox<\/a><\/span><\/span> in many regions outside of its usual native range. As <span class=\"MsoHyperlink\" style=\"color:#0563c1\"><span style=\"text-decoration:underline\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.science.org\/content\/article\/why-the-monkeypox-outbreak-is-mostly-affecting-men-who-have-sex-with-men\" style=\"color:#0563c1; text-decoration:underline\">gay and bisexual men are disproportionately represented<\/a><\/span><\/span> among new infections, disseminating information on monkeypox prevention and treatment will probably be a vital topic for queer communities in 2022. LGBTQ+ events and academic conferences will be key opportunities for researchers to discuss the challenges posed by the outbreak and to strategize on how to <span class=\"MsoHyperlink\" style=\"color:#0563c1\"><span style=\"text-decoration:underline\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.aidsmap.com\/news\/may-2022\/monkeypox-spreading-among-gay-men-worldwide\" style=\"color:#0563c1; text-decoration:underline\">promote safe sexual practices<\/a><\/span><\/span> and <span class=\"MsoHyperlink\" style=\"color:#0563c1\"><span style=\"text-decoration:underline\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.unaids.org\/en\/resources\/presscentre\/pressreleaseandstatementarchive\/2022\/may\/20220522_PR_Monkeypox\" style=\"color:#0563c1; text-decoration:underline\">combat misinformation and bigotry<\/a><\/span><\/span>.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Since the pivotal Stonewall Riots of 1969 and the first Pride events organized in 1970, the increased acceptance of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LGBTQ+) people the world over has been nothing short of remarkable.
