The expectation is of course justified &#8211; how else would people learn about a study that has been conducted and its results? For centuries, writing and publishing in a peer reviewed journal has been the most efficient way to disseminate research. Writing is what makes research usable and valuable to society.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 8pt;\"><span style=\"font-size: 11pt;\"><span style=\"line-height: 107%;\"><span style=\"font-family: Calibri,sans-serif;\"><span lang=\"EN-US\" style=\"font-size: 10.0pt;\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\"><span style=\"line-height: 107%;\">However, most researchers struggle with academic writing. Surveys of over 40,000 academics in the US reveal that (<\/span><\/span><a style=\"color: blue; text-decoration: underline;\" href=\"https:\/\/spirituality.ucla.edu\/docs\/academic-articles\/Lindholm_Astin_Interior_Faculty.pdf\"><span style=\"font-size: 10.0pt;\"><span style=\"line-height: 107%;\">Lindholm et al. 2005<\/span><\/span><\/a><span lang=\"EN-US\" style=\"font-size: 10.0pt;\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\"><span style=\"line-height: 107%;\">; text-decoration: underline;\" href=\"https:\/\/csuwrites.colostate.edu\/faculty-researcher-writing-groups\/\"><span style=\"font-size: 10.0pt;\"><span style=\"background: white;\"><span style=\"line-height: 107%;\"><span style=\"color: black;\">this one<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/a><span lang=\"EN-US\" style=\"font-size: 10.0pt;\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\"><span style=\"background: white;\"><span style=\"line-height: 107%;\"><span style=\"color: black;\">, <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><a style=\"color: blue; Writing workshops and writing retreats (like <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><a style=\"color: blue; text-decoration: underline;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.inkwellretreats.org\/\"><span style=\"font-size: 10.0pt;\"><span style=\"background: white;\"><span style=\"line-height: 107%;\"><span style=\"color: black;\">this<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/a><span lang=\"EN-US\" style=\"font-size: 10.0pt;\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\"><span style=\"background: white;\"><span style=\"line-height: 107%;\"><span style=\"color: black;\"> and <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><a style=\"color: blue; text-decoration: underline;\" href=\"https:\/\/artisagreece.org\/artisa-programs-writing-retreat-academics\/\"><span style=\"font-size: 10.0pt;\"><span style=\"background: white;\"><span style=\"line-height: 107%;\"><span style=\"color: black;\">this<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/a><span lang=\"EN-US\" style=\"font-size: 10.0pt;\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\"><span style=\"background: white;\"><span style=\"line-height: 107%;\"><span style=\"color: black;\">) are becoming increasingly popular among academics. Many universities have successfully employed dedicated faculty writing groups to increase faculty productivity in terms of grant writing and manuscript writing for publication. <b>Why are researchers joining writing groups? How do writing groups support the academic writing process for researchers?<\/b><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 8pt;\"><span style=\"font-size: 11pt;\"><span style=\"line-height: 107%;\"><span style=\"font-family: Calibri,sans-serif;\"><b><span lang=\"EN-US\" style=\"font-size: 10.0pt;\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\"><span style=\"line-height: 107%;\">Scheduling and protecting time for academic writing:<\/span><\/span><\/b><span lang=\"EN-US\" style=\"font-size: 10.0pt;\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\"><span style=\"line-height: 107%;\"> <span style=\"background: white;\"><span style=\"color: black;\">A researcher\u2019s work involves a lot of multi-tasking<\/span><\/span> \u2013 between conducting experiments, collecting and analyzing data, teaching responsibilities, attending conferences, it is no wonder that they struggle to find dedicated time for writing. In addition, distractions are rife in today\u2019s world and it\u2019s hard to stop the urge to check and respond to messages and emails. But things are different when you\u2019re writing with a group &#8211; you have blocked a pre-scheduled and dedicated time for writing. Moreover, when you\u2019re writing with others, you\u2019re likely to stop yourself from indulging in distractions. During the writing hour, you\u2019ll probably have your phone off and hopefully, nobody will barge in to talk to you, and hopefully, you\u2019ll resist the urge to check emails. <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 8pt;\"><span style=\"font-size: 11pt;\"><span style=\"line-height: 107%;\"><span style=\"font-family: Calibri,sans-serif;\"><b><span lang=\"EN-US\" style=\"font-size: 10.0pt;\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\"><span style=\"background: white;\"><span style=\"line-height: 107%;\"><span style=\"color: black;\">Increasing productivity:<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/b> <span lang=\"EN-US\" style=\"font-size: 10.0pt;\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\"><span style=\"line-height: 107%;\">Research has shown that academics who actively participate in Faculty Writing Groups are more productive than those who do not &#8211; \u00a0faculty writing group participants have seen an increased rate of publications (<\/span><\/span><a style=\"color: blue; text-decoration: underline;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S2666374021000704#bib0022\"><span lang=\"EN-US\" style=\"font-size: 10.0pt;\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\"><span style=\"line-height: 107%;\">McGrail,\u00a0Rickard &amp; Jones, 2006<\/span><\/span><\/a><span class=\"MsoHyperlink\" style=\"color: blue;\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">;\u00a0<a style=\"color: blue; text-decoration: underline;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S2666374021000704#bib0033\"><span style=\"font-size: 10.0pt;\"><span style=\"line-height: 107%;\">Tysick &amp; Babb,\u00a02006<\/span><\/span><\/a><\/span><\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\" style=\"font-size: 10.0pt;\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\"><span style=\"line-height: 107%;\">) and grant applications (<\/span><\/span><a style=\"color: blue; text-decoration: underline;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S2666374021000704#bib0021\"><span lang=\"EN-US\" style=\"font-size: 10.0pt;\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\"><span style=\"line-height: 107%;\">Houfek\u00a0et\u00a0al., 2010<\/span><\/span><\/a><span lang=\"EN-US\" style=\"font-size: 10.0pt;\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\"><span style=\"line-height: 107%;\">).\u00a0Writing groups are beneficial for early career researchers as well \u2013 meeting in groups at a scheduled time and keeping members accountable for their progress has helped young academics overcome the starting problem and make progress in academic writing (<a style=\"color: blue; text-decoration: underline;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S2666374021000704#bib0013\">Franks,\u00a02018<\/a>). <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 8pt;\"><span style=\"font-size: 11pt;\"><span style=\"line-height: 107%;\"><span style=\"font-family: Calibri,sans-serif;\"><b><span lang=\"EN-US\" style=\"font-size: 10.0pt;\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\"><span style=\"line-height: 107%;\">Providing social support:<\/span><\/span><\/b><span lang=\"EN-US\" style=\"font-size: 10.0pt;\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\"><span style=\"line-height: 107%;\"> During the pandemic, with labs were closed and research work stalled, many researchers decided to use the time to focus on writing and publication. However, with the lines between the personal and professional life blurring, many found it hard to focus on their writing tasks when working from home. Moreover, work would get lonely during the pandemic and many academics signed up for writing groups as a way to interact with other researchers. According to a qualitative study, even before the pandemic, women academics who had to balance work along with parenting and family commitments had already found writing groups a great form of social (<\/span><\/span><a style=\"color: blue; text-decoration: underline;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S2666374021000704#bib0028\"><span lang=\"EN-US\" style=\"font-size: 10.0pt;\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\"><span style=\"line-height: 107%;\">Penney\u00a0et\u00a0al., 2015<\/span><\/span><\/a><span lang=\"EN-US\" style=\"font-size: 10.0pt;\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\"><span style=\"line-height: 107%;\">).\u00a0During the pandemic, childcare and family responsibilities were shared by both men and women academics, and being part of\u00a0 virtual writing groups or joining <\/span><\/span><a style=\"color: blue; text-decoration: underline;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.chapelgarth-estate.co.uk\/virtual-writing-retreats7a103299\"><span style=\"font-size: 10.0pt;\"><span style=\"line-height: 107%;\">a virtual writing retreat<\/span><\/span><\/a><span lang=\"EN-US\" style=\"font-size: 10.0pt;\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\"><span style=\"line-height: 107%;\"> emerged as great opportunities to engage socially with other researchers and avoid the loneliness of working from home. With things easing up after the pandemic, virtual writing groups are still seen as a great way to connect with researchers outside of their university and field.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 8pt;\"><span style=\"font-size: 11pt;\"><span style=\"line-height: 107%;\"><span style=\"font-family: Calibri,sans-serif;\"><span lang=\"EN-US\" style=\"font-size: 10.0pt;\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\"><span style=\"line-height: 107%;\"><b>Learning new academic writing and productivity skills: <\/b>Working with a group of supportive peers means you ask questions, seek advice, share tips and hacks, and learn from others. Writing groups bring a sense of community (<\/span><\/span><a style=\"color: blue; text-decoration: underline;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S2666374021000704#bib0018\"><span lang=\"EN-US\" style=\"font-size: 10.0pt;\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\"><span style=\"line-height: 107%;\">Herman,\u00a0Abate &amp; Walker, 2013<\/span><\/span><\/a><span lang=\"EN-US\" style=\"font-size: 10.0pt;\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\"><span style=\"line-height: 107%;\">) and there is often a regular exchange of information in these groups. Thus, researchers are likely to learn new tips from others about academic writing and productivity and can experiment with these to find out what works best for them. Writing groups have different and innovative approaches to sharing knowledge and fostering a collaborative environment. For instance, some groups have a shared resource bank while others have a common accountability sheet, some may have a peer feedback process in place, while some others might incorporate academic writing workshops or courses into their process. <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 8pt;\"><span style=\"font-size: 11pt;\"><span style=\"line-height: 107%;\"><span style=\"font-family: Calibri,sans-serif;\"><b><span lang=\"EN-US\" style=\"font-size: 10.0pt;\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\"><span style=\"line-height: 107%;\">Reducing apprehension around writing: <\/span><\/span><\/b><span lang=\"EN-US\" style=\"font-size: 10.0pt;\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\"><span style=\"line-height: 107%;\">Researchers often experience negative emotions around academic writing. Although academic writing is such a crucial skill to having a successful research career, it is seldom taught at universities. \u00a0As a result, most early career researchers, and sometimes even senior academics, struggle with academic writing and experience negative emotions such as anxiety and self-doubt when it comes to writing. Manuscript rejections and negative peer reviewer comments often increase the sense of frustration, hopelessness, and apprehension around academic writing. The struggle gets worse for researchers for whom English is a foreign language. Knowing that you are not alone and writing with a group of others who share similar doubts and fears can help reduce the negative emotions around academic writing. Research has shown that regular participation in writing groups makes researchers feel more confident and competent as writers (<\/span><\/span><a style=\"color: blue; text-decoration: underline;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S2666374021000704#bib0026\"><span lang=\"EN-US\" style=\"font-size: 10.0pt;\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\"><span style=\"line-height: 107%;\">Packer,\u00a02013<\/span><\/span><\/a><span lang=\"EN-US\" style=\"font-size: 10.0pt;\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\"><span style=\"line-height: 107%;\">). <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 8pt;\"><span style=\"font-size: 11pt;\"><span style=\"line-height: 107%;\"><span style=\"font-family: Calibri,sans-serif;\"><span lang=\"EN-US\" style=\"font-size: 10.0pt;\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\"><span style=\"line-height: 107%;\">A reseacher\u2019s journey can get lonely \u2013 even though you meet other researchers at the lab and share an office with them, each of you works in your own bubble. There\u2019s hardly any time to have a good conversation with your peers, your supervisor is often too busy to give you the time and critical feedback that you expect, and in the absence of a structured work schedule, your academic writing goals suffer. Having a writing buddy, joining a writing group or retreat can be great ways to incorporate academic writing into your schedule and making consistent progress on your writing.
