Many researchers reject reviewing opportunities because they are pressed for time and need to meet their own publication and funding requirements. The burden to perform competent peer reviews, therefore, often rests on a small number of academics, leading to agonizing waits for authors hoping to have their papers published. <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify; margin: 0cm 0cm 8pt; margin-right: 0cm; margin-left: 0cm;\"><span style=\"font-size: 11pt;\"><span style=\"line-height: 115%;\"><span style=\"font-family: Calibri,sans-serif;\"><span lang=\"EN-US\" style=\"font-size: 12.0pt;\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\"><span style=\"background: white;\"><span style=\"line-height: 115%;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman',serif;\"><span style=\"color: black;\">Moreover, expectations from peer reviewers themselves can vary by journal, discipline, and region, and with other changes in the academic and publishing landscape. All of this places pressure on the current peer review system and may call into question the effectiveness of the process in maintaining the <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\" style=\"font-size: 12.0pt;\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\"><span style=\"line-height: 115%;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman',serif;\">quality and integrity of published research<\/span><\/span><\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\" style=\"font-size: 12.0pt;\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\"><span style=\"background: white;\"><span style=\"line-height: 115%;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman',serif;\"><span style=\"color: black;\">.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify; margin: 0cm 0cm 8pt; margin-right: 0cm; margin-left: 0cm;\"><span style=\"font-size: 11pt;\"><span style=\"line-height: 115%;\"><span style=\"font-family: Calibri,sans-serif;\"><span lang=\"EN-US\" style=\"font-size: 12.0pt;\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\"><span style=\"line-height: 115%;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman',serif;\">These challenges notwithstanding, the integral role of peer review in<\/span><\/span><\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\" style=\"font-size: 12.0pt;\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\"><span style=\"background: white;\"><span style=\"line-height: 115%;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman',serif;\"><span style=\"color: black;\"> academia cannot be denied. Quality assurance in some form or the other will always be a crucial cog in the machine of scholarship, and the academic community is actively trying out new models, signaling hope and change in the way peer review is conducted.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify; margin: 0cm 0cm 8pt; margin-right: 0cm; margin-left: 0cm;\"><span style=\"font-size: 11pt;\"><span style=\"line-height: 115%;\"><span style=\"font-family: Calibri,sans-serif;\"><b><span lang=\"EN-US\" style=\"font-size: 16.0pt;\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\"><span style=\"line-height: 115%;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman',serif;\">Novel peer review models<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/b><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0cm; text-align: justify; margin: 0cm 0cm 8pt; margin-right: 0cm; margin-left: 0cm;\"><span style=\"font-size: 11pt;\"><span style=\"line-height: 115%;\"><span style=\"font-family: Calibri,sans-serif;\"><span lang=\"EN-US\" style=\"font-size: 12.0pt;\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\"><span style=\"line-height: 115%;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman',serif;\">The formats of scholarly dissemination keep evolving. From print-only, subscription-based traditional journals, we have now moved to an era of digital publication and open access (OA). There is a thrust toward open science and open data, particularly in the face of global crises such as COVID-19 and climate change. <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0cm; text-align: justify; margin: 0cm 0cm 8pt; margin-right: 0cm; margin-left: 0cm;\"><span style=\"font-size: 11pt;\"><span style=\"line-height: 115%;\"><span style=\"font-family: Calibri,sans-serif;\"><span lang=\"EN-US\" style=\"font-size: 12.0pt;\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\"><span style=\"line-height: 115%;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman',serif;\">In response, peer review models have not remained static. For example, during the current pandemic, academic journals followed fast-track systems for COVID-19\u2013related content to hasten review and publication<sup>1<\/sup>.Academic publishing and communications organizations such as <i>PLOS<\/i> and <i>eLife<\/i> created a Rapid Reviewer Initiative to maximize the efficiency of peer review of COVID-19 research. This was an unprecedented and \u201cuncommon moment of scholarly publishers collaborating to gather useful insights on the performance of the scholarly communication system.\u201d<sup>2<\/sup> Meanwhile, preprints provide unique opportunities for open and effective peer review. The<\/span><\/span><\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\" style=\"font-size: 12.0pt;\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\"><span style=\"background: white;\"><span style=\"line-height: 115%;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman',serif;\"><span style=\"color: black;\"> last few years have witnessed a spurt in new forms and ideas for peer review to meet different evolving needs and expectations. <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\" style=\"font-size: 12.0pt;\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\"><span style=\"line-height: 115%;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman',serif;\">Let\u2019s look at some notable developments in the last few years.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0cm; text-align: justify; margin: 0cm 0cm 8pt; margin-right: 0cm; margin-left: 0cm;\"><span style=\"font-size: 11pt;\"><span style=\"line-height: 115%;\"><span style=\"font-family: Calibri,sans-serif;\"><b><i><span lang=\"EN-US\" style=\"font-size: 14.0pt;\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\"><span style=\"background: white;\"><span style=\"line-height: 115%;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman',serif;\"><span style=\"color: black;\">Open peer review<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/i><\/b><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify; margin-right: 0cm; margin-left: 0cm;\"><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"><span style=\"line-height: 115%;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman',serif;\">Open peer review (OPR) aims to make reviews and publishing decisions more transparent. There is no clear definition for OPR, but it broadly refers to a peer review model wherein elements of the peer review process are made publicly available before or after publication. This system hinges on combinations of the following:<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 7.5pt 0cm; text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 13.5pt;\"><span style=\"background: white;\"><span style=\"line-height: 115%;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman',serif;\"><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\"><i><span lang=\"EN-US\" style=\"font-size: 12.0pt;\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\"><span style=\"background: white;\"><span style=\"line-height: 115%;\"><span style=\"color: #222222;\"><span style=\"font-weight: normal;\">Open identities: <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/i><span lang=\"EN-US\" style=\"font-size: 12.0pt;\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\"><span style=\"background: white;\"><span style=\"line-height: 115%;\"><span style=\"color: #222222;\"><span style=\"font-weight: normal;\">Reviewer identity is known.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify; margin: 0cm 0cm 8pt;\"><span style=\"font-size: 11pt;\"><span style=\"background: white;\"><span style=\"line-height: 115%;\"><span style=\"font-family: Calibri,sans-serif;\"><i><span lang=\"EN-US\" style=\"font-size: 12.0pt;\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\"><span style=\"background: white;\"><span style=\"line-height: 115%;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman',serif;\"><span style=\"color: #222222;\">Open reports:<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/i><span lang=\"EN-US\" style=\"font-size: 12.0pt;\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\"><span style=\"background: white;\"><span style=\"line-height: 115%;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman',serif;\"><span style=\"color: #222222;\"> Peer review reports are published alongside the relevant article.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 7.5pt 0cm; text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 13.5pt;\"><span style=\"background: white;\"><span style=\"line-height: 115%;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman',serif;\"><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\"><i><span lang=\"EN-US\" style=\"font-size: 12.0pt;\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\"><span style=\"background: white;\"><span style=\"line-height: 115%;\"><span style=\"color: #222222;\"><span style=\"font-weight: normal;\">Open participation:<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/i><span lang=\"EN-US\" style=\"font-size: 12.0pt;\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\"><span style=\"background: white;\"><span style=\"line-height: 115%;\"><span style=\"color: #222222;\"><span style=\"font-weight: normal;\"> The paper is open to scrutiny and feedback by the community.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify; margin: 0cm 0cm 8pt; margin-right: 0cm; margin-left: 0cm;\"><span style=\"font-size: 11pt;\"><span style=\"line-height: 115%;\"><span style=\"font-family: Calibri,sans-serif;\"><span lang=\"EN-US\" style=\"font-size: 12.0pt;\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\"><span style=\"background: white;\"><span style=\"line-height: 115%;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman',serif;\"><span style=\"color: #222222;\">OPR in various flavors has been implemented by several journals and scholarly platforms. <i>The<\/i> <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><i><span lang=\"EN-US\" style=\"font-size: 12.0pt;\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\"><span style=\"line-height: 115%;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman',serif;\">EMBO Journal<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/i><span lang=\"EN-US\" style=\"font-size: 12.0pt;\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\"><span style=\"line-height: 115%;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman',serif;\"> allows pre-publication interaction among reviewers, who comment on each other\u2019s reports before the editor makes a decision.<\/span><\/span><\/span> <i><span lang=\"EN-US\" style=\"font-size: 12.0pt;\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\"><span style=\"line-height: 115%;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman',serif;\">Frontiers<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/i><span lang=\"EN-US\" style=\"font-size: 12.0pt;\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\"><span style=\"line-height: 115%;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman',serif;\"> journals have an interactive collaboration stage involving the authors, reviewers, and Associate Editor, which enables quicker arrival at a consensus.<sup>3<\/sup><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify; margin: 0cm 0cm 8pt; margin-right: 0cm; margin-left: 0cm;\"><span style=\"font-size: 11pt;\"><span style=\"line-height: 115%;\"><span style=\"font-family: Calibri,sans-serif;\"><span lang=\"EN-US\" style=\"font-size: 12.0pt;\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\"><span style=\"background: white;\"><span style=\"line-height: 115%;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman',serif;\"><span style=\"color: #222222;\">Making review reports open means that the research community can evaluate the review process. PPPR can also bring in much needed transparency. By allowing anyone in the scientific community to evaluate a paper after it has been made public, PPPR extends the window of scrutiny beyond the publication date.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify; margin: 0cm 0cm 8pt; margin-right: 0cm; margin-left: 0cm;\"><span style=\"font-size: 11pt;\"><span style=\"line-height: 115%;\"><span style=\"font-family: Calibri,sans-serif;\"><span lang=\"EN-US\" style=\"font-size: 12.0pt;\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\"><span style=\"background: white;\"><span style=\"line-height: 115%;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman',serif;\"><span style=\"color: #222222;\">PPPR can take a number of forms, such as Letters to the Editor, blog posts, and social media posts. Some publication platforms like <i>eLife<\/i> have pioneered this model. According to <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><a style=\"color: #0563c1; text-decoration: underline;\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/mbeisen\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-size: 12.0pt;\"><span style=\"line-height: 115%;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman',serif;\"><span style=\"color: #222222;\"><span style=\"text-decoration: none;\"><span style=\"text-underline: none;\">Michael Eisen<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/a><span lang=\"EN-US\" style=\"font-size: 12.0pt;\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\"><span style=\"line-height: 115%;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman',serif;\"><span style=\"color: #222222;\">, Editor-in-Chief of <i>eLife<\/i>,<span style=\"background: white;\"> and his colleagues, <i>eLife<\/i> tries to \u201creplace the traditional \u2018review, then publish\u2019 model developed in the age of the printing press with a \u2018publish, then review\u2019 model optimized for the age of the internet.\u201d<sup>4<\/sup><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify; margin: 0cm 0cm 8pt; margin-right: 0cm; margin-left: 0cm;\"><span style=\"font-size: 11pt;\"><span style=\"line-height: 115%;\"><span style=\"font-family: Calibri,sans-serif;\"><b><span lang=\"EN-US\" style=\"font-size: 12.0pt;\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\"><span style=\"background: white;\"><span style=\"line-height: 115%;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman',serif;\"><span style=\"color: #222222;\">Twitter peer review<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/b><span lang=\"EN-US\" style=\"font-size: 12.0pt;\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\"><span style=\"background: white;\"><span style=\"line-height: 115%;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman',serif;\"><span style=\"color: #222222;\"> may be considered a type of PPPR. Many scientists today spend at least some time daily on social media platforms like Twitter. On Twitter, numerous researchers deconstruct papers and their limitations, strengths, and conclusions\u2014often in lay terms, sometimes even infusing humor and memes! The Twitter \u201cthread\u201d is fast becoming a way to <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\" style=\"font-size: 12.0pt;\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\"><span style=\"background: white;\"><span style=\"line-height: 115%;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman',serif;\"><span style=\"color: black;\">explain complex concepts and phenomena. In a Twitter thread, one is not restricted by a 280-character limit. <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify; margin: 0cm 0cm 8pt; margin-right: 0cm; margin-left: 0cm;\"><span style=\"font-size: 11pt;\"><span style=\"line-height: 115%;\"><span style=\"font-family: Calibri,sans-serif;\"><span lang=\"EN-US\" style=\"font-size: 12.0pt;\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\"><span style=\"background: white;\"><span style=\"line-height: 115%;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman',serif;\"><span style=\"color: black;\">That being said, Twitter cannot be a formal system of peer review but can serve as a channel to draw attention to grave issues and amplify important messages. <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;
