They don\u2019t know how strong this relationship or its direction (i.e., did participants with higher dietary fiber have lower systolic blood pressure or did they have higher systolic blood pressure?).\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p paraeid=\"{7c4c49e8-346a-4ed0-82d7-0b9f006a05ad}{58}\" paraid=\"484286874\"><strong>Solution:<\/strong> If you add \u201cr = -.78\u201d in the parentheses at the end of the above sentence, your readers will understand that this is a strong inverse relationship. Thus, they get a better idea of your actual findings.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p paraeid=\"{7c4c49e8-346a-4ed0-82d7-0b9f006a05ad}{72}\" paraid=\"1346958888\">Here\u2019s another example:\u00a0<\/p>\n<p paraeid=\"{7c4c49e8-346a-4ed0-82d7-0b9f006a05ad}{80}\" paraid=\"1690026756\"><strong>Avoid: <\/strong>We found a significant difference in mean HbA1c levels between the smoker and non-smoker groups (P &lt; .05).\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p paraeid=\"{7c4c49e8-346a-4ed0-82d7-0b9f006a05ad}{108}\" paraid=\"1887983495\"><strong>Explanation:<\/strong> Readers need to know how large this difference actually is. For instance, a mean HbA1c difference below 0.1 suggests that smoking status does not account for a meaningful difference in HbA1c levels. Also, readers don\u2019t know what statistical test was used to calculate this difference.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p paraeid=\"{7c4c49e8-346a-4ed0-82d7-0b9f006a05ad}{132}\" paraid=\"1629852271\"><strong>Solution: <\/strong>Provide the actual mean HbA1c levels for the two groups and include the test statistic (t, F, etc.).\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p paraeid=\"{7c4c49e8-346a-4ed0-82d7-0b9f006a05ad}{156}\" paraid=\"1514190109\">As you can see in the above example, a result can be statistically significant without being actually useful. \u201cStatistically significant\u201d does not necessarily mean that the result is clinically meaningful or important from a practical perspective.
