According to the\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">EDUCAUSE 2025 AI Landscape Study<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">,\u00a0fewer than half of universities have\u00a0established\u00a0formal governance policies, despite 57% note AI as a strategic priority.[2]\u00a0This gap is\u00a0striking, given the rapid advancement\u00a0and rise in use\u00a0of\u00a0AI\u00a0tools and technology. Access to AI and being equipped for it are\u00a0two\u00a0very different\u00a0things. As institutions adopt tools, form task forces, and release AI policies, it is crucial to pause and\u00a0ask:\u00a0what are we\u00a0actually trying\u00a0to achieve, and does our current approach get us there?\u00a0The\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">2025 EDUCAUSE AI Landscape Study<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0reported\u00a0that although AI is\u00a0stated\u00a0as\u00a0a priority, only 22% of institutions have a comprehensive, institution-wide strategy.[3]\u00a0Before investing in individual tools or specific solutions, it is essential to gather key stakeholders, including faculty, administrators, and technical teams, to\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">define\u00a0a shared vision for AI&#8217;s role<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">,\u00a0grounded in the institution&#8217;s mission and strategic goals.[4]\u00a0Without this alignment, even well-resourced AI initiatives\u00a0may risk becoming experiments that never quite deliver on their promise.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;134233117&quot;:false,&quot;134233118&quot;:false,&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335551550&quot;:1,&quot;335551620&quot;:1,&quot;335559685&quot;:0,&quot;335559737&quot;:0,&quot;335559738&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:0,&quot;335559740&quot;:240}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Governance and ethics:\u00a0<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Implementing AI without\u00a0established\u00a0policies can lead to\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">hesitancy in its use<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0and inconsistent adoption across the institution.[5]\u00a0Yet, for many universities, policy development has lagged. Part of the issue may be that governance or policies are\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">often developed reactively<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, for example, in response to an integrity incident or data concern, rather than being integrated into the foundation of AI strategy.[6]\u00a0This approach risks framing AI as a problem to manage rather than a capability to enhance research and academic excellence. Data from a\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">survey by Turnitin and Vanson Bourne<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0suggests that 89% of academic administrators and 80% of educators believe AI readiness is essential for graduates, yet 39% of educators state they don&#8217;t know how to get the best out of AI in their own role, and 47% want to use it for better decision making but simply don&#8217;t know how.[6]\u00a0That&#8217;s\u00a0not a technology\u00a0gap\u00a0but a capability gap that\u00a0mere access to AI tools cannot bridge.\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">Research\u00a0conducted also\u00a0suggests<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0that only\u00a036% of students\u00a0felt\u00a0like they\u00a0received\u00a0adequate support from their institution to develop AI skills, even as they overwhelmingly believe those skills are essential for their careers.[6]\u00a0Closing that gap is one of the most\u00a0tangible actions\u00a0institutions can\u00a0take to\u00a0turn AI ambition into AI impact.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Partnerships and collaboration:<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0The complexity of AI transformation\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">calls for a collaborative approach<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, both within and across organizations. Within institutions, that means bringing different key teams together from the outset. Beyond the campus, the case for collaboration is equally strong.[4]\u00a0Universities working together can share\u00a0expertise\u00a0and develop policies and solutions that\u00a0benefit\u00a0the broader sector.\u00a0Additionally,\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">academia-industry partnerships add another dimension entirely<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, connecting institutions to a wider network of\u00a0expertise\u00a0and support,\u00a0enabling them to keep\u00a0pace with an AI landscape that is advancing faster than any institution can navigate\u00a0alone.[7]<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">While getting started early has its advantages, what matters more is asking the right questions, building the right foundations, and working with trusted partners.
