Recently,\u00a0<\/span>Editage hosted the Saudi Research Summit in Riyadh<\/span>, bringing together institutional leaders, government officials, and researchers to explore how the responsible adoption of AI can enhance research\u00a0output,\u00a0sharpen\u00a0competitive positioning, and\u00a0expand\u00a0global\u00a0academic influence.[1]\u00a0This event underscores a pivotal shift: AI has transitioned from a peripheral topic in higher education to a central focus.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

This shift also prompts another important question: what does it truly mean for a university to be AI-ready?<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

While AI is being\u00a0utilized\u00a0across campuses for administrative, research, and learning purposes, the use of AI tools is just one aspect of the equation. According to the\u00a0<\/span>EDUCAUSE 2025 AI Landscape Study<\/span>,\u00a0fewer than half of universities have\u00a0established\u00a0formal governance policies, despite 57% note AI as a strategic priority.[2]\u00a0This gap is\u00a0striking, given the rapid advancement\u00a0and rise in use\u00a0of\u00a0AI\u00a0tools and technology. Access to AI and being equipped for it are\u00a0two\u00a0very different\u00a0things. True readiness involves a comprehensive framework that includes\u00a0having a strong\u00a0infrastructure, human\u00a0expertise, governance, and a cultural and educational foundation to\u00a0integrate AI effectively and aligned with an institution\u2019s goals and mission.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Leadership strategy:\u00a0<\/span><\/b>Among all the pillars of AI readiness, this one is fundamental. As institutions adopt tools, form task forces, and release AI policies, it is crucial to pause and\u00a0ask:\u00a0what are we\u00a0actually trying\u00a0to achieve, and does our current approach get us there?\u00a0The\u00a0<\/span>2025 EDUCAUSE AI Landscape Study<\/span>\u00a0reported\u00a0that although AI is\u00a0stated\u00a0as\u00a0a priority, only 22% of institutions have a comprehensive, institution-wide strategy.[3]\u00a0Before investing in individual tools or specific solutions, it is essential to gather key stakeholders, including faculty, administrators, and technical teams, to\u00a0<\/span>define\u00a0a shared vision for AI’s role<\/span>,\u00a0grounded in the institution’s mission and strategic goals.[4]\u00a0Without this alignment, even well-resourced AI initiatives\u00a0may risk becoming experiments that never quite deliver on their promise.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Governance and ethics:\u00a0<\/span><\/b>Implementing AI without\u00a0established\u00a0policies can lead to\u00a0<\/span>hesitancy in its use<\/span>\u00a0and inconsistent adoption across the institution.[5]\u00a0Yet, for many universities, policy development has lagged. Part of the issue may be that governance or policies are\u00a0<\/span>often developed reactively<\/span>, for example, in response to an integrity incident or data concern, rather than being integrated into the foundation of AI strategy.[6]\u00a0This approach risks framing AI as a problem to manage rather than a capability to enhance research and academic excellence. Responsible AI adoption in higher education will require guidelines addressing data security, legal, and privacy concerns to be embedded in initiatives and regularly updated as the landscape evolves.[4,6]\u00a0When done correctly, governance can support the scaling and sustainability of AI use, rather than constraining it.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

AI literacy and skill building:\u00a0<\/span><\/b>What makes AI literacy and skill building particularly urgent is that AI adoption is moving faster than institutions can keep. Data from a\u00a0<\/span>survey by Turnitin and Vanson Bourne<\/span>\u00a0suggests that 89% of academic administrators and 80% of educators believe AI readiness is essential for graduates, yet 39% of educators state they don’t know how to get the best out of AI in their own role, and 47% want to use it for better decision making but simply don’t know how.[6]\u00a0That’s\u00a0not a technology\u00a0gap\u00a0but a capability gap that\u00a0mere access to AI tools cannot bridge.\u00a0<\/span>Research\u00a0conducted also\u00a0suggests<\/span>\u00a0that only\u00a036% of students\u00a0felt\u00a0like they\u00a0received\u00a0adequate support from their institution to develop AI skills, even as they overwhelmingly believe those skills are essential for their careers.[6]\u00a0Closing that gap is one of the most\u00a0tangible actions\u00a0institutions can\u00a0take to\u00a0turn AI ambition into AI impact.<\/span><\/p>\n

Partnerships and collaboration:<\/span><\/b>\u00a0The complexity of AI transformation\u00a0<\/span>calls for a collaborative approach<\/span>, both within and across organizations. Within institutions, that means bringing different key teams together from the outset. Beyond the campus, the case for collaboration is equally strong.[4]\u00a0Universities working together can share\u00a0expertise\u00a0and develop policies and solutions that\u00a0benefit\u00a0the broader sector.\u00a0Additionally,\u00a0<\/span>academia-industry partnerships add another dimension entirely<\/span>, connecting institutions to a wider network of\u00a0expertise\u00a0and support,\u00a0enabling them to keep\u00a0pace with an AI landscape that is advancing faster than any institution can navigate\u00a0alone.[7]<\/span><\/p>\n

While getting started early has its advantages, what matters more is asking the right questions, building the right foundations, and working with trusted partners. AI readiness is an ongoing commitment and for university\u00a0leaders,\u00a0the\u00a0question now is whether your institution is building the conditions for a transformation that works in your\u00a0favor.<\/span><\/p>\n
