A few days ago, as I was musing about nothing in particular, the words of Dr Seuss flashed across my mind: \u201cIt has often been said there\u2019s so much to be read, you never can cram all those words in your head.\u201d <\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

This made me wonder about the kind of writing that could capture readers\u2019 attention amidst the volumes of published research in this day and age. Here are a few building blocks I could think of, presented in my inspiration\u2019s favorite form of writing – poetry.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span>These tips for writing an academic paper should help you with the smaller nuances that you need to be attentive towards.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Communicate, don\u2019t complicate \u2015<\/span><\/span><\/span>
\nYour results \u201cshow\u201d a trend, they don\u2019t \u201cdemonstrate.\u201d<\/span>
\nPut yourself in your readers\u2019 shoes \u2015<\/span>
\nThe simpler of the two words, always choose.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/em><\/span><\/p>\n

A \u201ccommonly known fact\u201d is a generalisation \u2015<\/span><\/span><\/span>
\nAvoid making one and provide a citation.<\/span>
\nBefore your readers realise that they have read it,<\/span>
\nThey should see your sources have received due credit.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/em><\/span><\/p>\n

Spelling and punctuation can lead or mislead,<\/span>
\nSo do not forget to edit and proofread,<\/span>
\nAs \u201cdiscreet variables\u201d keep their information confidential,<\/span>
\nWhile \u201cdiscrete variables\u201d take defined values in an interval.<\/span><\/p>\n

When you start a sentence with \u201cthere\u201d or \u201cit,\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/span>
\nYou should know there is room to omit.<\/span>
\nIf \u201cthere is a need\u201d or \u201cit is important,\u201d<\/span>
\nUse \u201cwe must\u201d instead, to make it more succinct.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/em><\/span><\/p>\n

The way you present your data should enable<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/em><\/span><\/p>\n

Your readers to understand every figure and table,<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/em><\/span><\/p>\n

Independently of the rest of the text,<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/em><\/span><\/p>\n

Which should only detail the most striking effects.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/em><\/span><\/p>\n

Every manuscript has a story to tell,<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/em><\/span><\/p>\n

Your story deserves to be narrated well;<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/em><\/span><\/p>\n

Follow these tips and write your narrative,<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/em><\/span><\/p>\n

Assured that it\u2019s nothing short of superlative.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/em><\/span><\/p>\n
