A professor trained 5 interns, and now, on the day of final assessment, he gave each a task: write a paragraph on a given topic. The next day, students came with their well-written and polished articles. The professor thought he would merge everything and make a single article, which he had to present at a conference. When he checked, he was completely shocked.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He asked how it was possible (that their writeups were almost identical<\/em>). <\/p>\n\n\n\n We all know how it is possible! They all used same prompts in an AI based app! <\/p>\n\n\n\n Note: This was an imaginary story, but not too far from reality.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n The use of AI applications is evolving and may further shape the future of academia. Building on this idea, the emergence of AI in higher education is transforming teaching and learning processes, creating opportunities for personalization and enhanced support in academic writing. This article argues that AI can help academic work, but it also brings important risks and challenges that require human oversight. This article also shares some experiences on work-life balance from various people working in higher education.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The scientific literature clarifies the clashes between AI\u2019s potential benefits and associated risks, such as student dependency, loss of critical thinking, and ethical concerns regarding authorship and plagiarism. AI is of great help in research, including literature screening, data analysis, coding, and writing; it also enables remote or virtual data collection via VR and may save time. At the same time, it raises concerns about unauthenticated results, authorship and credit, and deskilling.<\/p>\n\n\n\n When ChatGPT was launched in\u00a02022\u00a0by OpenAI as a free research preview, I, as an educator and researcher, was very excited because questions were being answered very quickly and with minimal research.<\/p>\n\n\n\n AI has revolutionized academia by helping with writing articles, managing complex ideas, idea generation, content structuring, literature synthesis, data management, editing, and ethical compliance. AI (ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini) demonstrates significant potential in academic writing, though challenges in academic integrity and AI-human balance persist. AI is transforming academic practices, necessitating broader integration and ethical use in research. <\/p>\n\n\n\n According to James Evens<\/em>, University of Chicago professor of sociology and of data science, \u201cAI systems often perform \u2018deductive\u2019 science, filling in missing pieces of information based on the patterns it has seen. Still, when AI focuses on predictable data, it shrinks the variety of scientific questions. Papers written by AI are ‘boring papers’. They\u2019re driven by expectation. Humans tend to perform \u2018abductive science\u2019, making creative leaps to new ideas when they encounter something surprising that violates expectations.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n I have surveyed 10 faculty members from different universities in India, and data were collected. All faculty surveyed were in agreement that AI supports them with intelligent tutoring, grading and plagiarism detection. AI tools provide the option for personalized or asynchronous learning by enabling location- and time-independent teaching. <\/p>\n\n\n\n AI also assists with grant-matching, peer-review assignment, mentoring platforms, and administrative automation; it enables remote participation (e.g., holographic presence) in service roles like conferences or expert testimony.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Advantages of AI in higher education include faster drafting, language and grammar improvement, literature review support, better readability, editing and proofreading, brainstorming research questions, journal formatting help, time savings, translation support, and improved accessibility for researchers with limited writing support.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Disadvantages of AI in higher education include fabricated references and citations, plagiarism risk, loss of authorial voice, reduced critical thinking, factual errors, embedded bias, confidentiality risks from uploading unpublished work, authorship and accountability problems, peer-review confidentiality violations, unequal access to tools, unintended over-editing that shifts meaning, and blurred lines between AI-assisted and AI-generated scholarship.<\/p>\n\n\n\n “We need to steer the development of AI so that it respects human rights, democracy, and the safety of our societies before it is too late.” Yoshua Bengio<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n The use of AI tools in the education sector has significantly upgraded the work dynamics of teaching and administrative professionals. Faculties are using AI-driven systems for automating repetitive tasks, enhancing productivity and efficiency, remote work facilitation, lesson planning, assessment, student monitoring, and administrative tasks. It has some challenges too, such as increased workload and expectations. It has a great impact on work-life balance of education professionals across colleges and universities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n My survey findings reveal that 6 faculty members were extensively using AI-based applications for teaching, research, and assessments. 3 were trying to adapt the AI-based applications and were very keen to learn. While I found surprisingly only 1 member who was not very willing to enter the field of AI. It was very surprising for me, and I talked to him further and came to know that he still believes completely in human intelligence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Faculty who were using AI get their work done in less time felt that this saved time was further redistributed in cross-checking the results obtained by AI-based methods. They reported that AI had decreased the workload but not very significantly. They were relieved that everyday academic work that could be supported by AI. This included work such as content preparation, research planning, feedback analysis, summarizing PDFs, administrative work, and even setting assessments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Most interestingly, I received responses that because of AI, it was an unsaid expectation that the work can now be done quickly, so they were supposed to do more work than originally defined. Another interesting finding was that faculty described how students were becoming overly dependent on AI. Rather than learning on their own or from their mistakes, students often would turn to AI for a quick fix of their problems.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Overall, AI was playing the dual role as both an enabler and disruptor of work-life balance.<\/strong> <\/p>\n\n\n\n AI in academia can be approached with optimism (efficiency, augmented creativity, hybrid human-AI intelligence) as well as pessimism (deskilling, reduced transparency\/understanding). In summary, AI can be utilized for efficient and quick work, but it has not reduced workload significantly. This can be achieved by proper workflow integration, professional development, targeted automation, and redefining productivity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n As a result, human insight is essential for verification, ethical reasoning, identifying gaps, and understanding exactly what is required. It will keep creativity, thinking, and cognitive skills alive. Here the concern is whether AI reduces workload or redistributes it \u2014 shifting labor from writing toward fact-checking, reference verification, and ethical oversight.<\/p>\n\n\n\n In the end, it is up to us, as humans, to use our natural insight.
